Le jeune Simon Doyle est ruiné. Dans l'espoir de lui trouver du travail, sa fiancée Jacqueline l'introduit à sa riche amie d'enfance, Linnet Ridgeway. Linnet et Simon tombent amoureux et décident de se marier.
