Amusing fact: Some Blu-ray drives on laptops actually play HD DVDs!  I don't have any [brand] names but a friend confirmed it.  Presumably because they're so close to regular DVDs on the "tech side."

That this will continue on is more doubtful, so a back-up player sounds like a better way to go about it.
