| Posted: | | | | If it requires policing, the cost-benefit ratio probably won't be favorable - and considering that there are quite a few forums elsewhere dedicated to hot issues.... |

| Posted: | | | | I'm agreeing with the good Doctor on this one. There are plenty of other forums in which to discuss these matters. In my opinion these discussions shouldn't have been here in the first place, they only ever lead to bad feelings and insult-slinging. I know of at least one user who has stopped posting directly because of the political threads, and that's one user too many. It's a DVD forum for crying out loud! |

I'd argue that a subscription-only need only be policed to remove potentially libelous material.
If people don't want to risk being offended, they wouldn't have to sign up for access. Entry would be totally voluntary, and it would be up to the individual to decide whether or not to risk being offended.
No one would be forced to read anything -- because they could opt out of that particular forum and never see the offensive material again.
Libel is something different -- something Invelos (Ken & Gerry) must guard against, whether or not a P&R forum is set up.
EDIT:
On the other hand, northbloke makes a good argument against this idea. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges. DVD Profiler user since June 15, 2001 | | | Last edited: by kdh1949 |

| Posted: | | | | I can see north's point too. However, IF Ken doesn't want to stop the political discussions altogether, then making a separate area for them that YOU have to sign up for does seem to be the best way to go. That way if you're offended by any of the comments it's because you've chosen to be able to see them. As kdh1949 says, it wouldn't need to be moderated any more than the existing areas. |

| Posted: | | | | Well yes, that would be ideal. However as it currently stands, anything legal is allowed. We're just trying to move some of the more controversial topics to their own area so those of us with no interest (or don't want to be annoyed, etc...) wont see them. |

I think that would be more fitting in a forum for a DVD collection software, don't you think? Why that's just ... heresy! Talk about movies? The very idea... | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? | Posted: | | | | I think having an "opt in" format for an area where we can discuss politics and current events if we wish is a great idea.
We all come from different backgrounds and have different approaches to things, including DVDs and how we catalogue them. I think knowing how someone deals with political things helps one understand that person's approach to life and other areas, which directly carries over to how they interact here with others about DVD issues.
I'm interested in hearing the views of people in other countries, even when it ticks me off, and there aren't that many places where I can do that with people who aren't 100% strangers.
Make it an "opt in" area, no harm no foul, and if anybody DOES opt in, they can't go crying to Ken or Gerri is they get their feelings hurt, and no carryover to other areas is allowed. | | | John

| Posted: | | | | That's a good idea Rifter. We have other 'opt-in' forums, why not one for this. You might want to make the same post over here though. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
