Just can't stand to not take a shot can you? Geez. I was only trying to be funny since the source of this topic's discussion is the DVD with the title "Wrong Is Right". | | | Martin Zuidervliet

| Posted: | | | | Quoting T!M: Quote: We've debated this many times before, but I thought the outcome was the same every time... The rules say:
Quote: For English titles do not capitalize joining words such as "of", "the", "a", "in", etc. unless they are the first, last or only word in of the title.
IMHO, a verb like "is" does not qualify as a "joining word" (how can a verb be considered a joining word?), and as such, it should be capitalised. If you have doubts about this, please try and think what you'd for, for example, with the past tense ("was")... Would you capitalise that?
I realise that there are certain variations of the standard capitalisation rules that don't capitalise all forms of the verb "to be", but since the rules specifically use the term "joining words", and don't include an exception for all forms of "to be", I really don't think this particular variant is meant here. If it had, it could have easily been added to the listed examples... Since it isn't, I really feel the correct title for DVD Profiler purposes is 'Wrong Is Right, not 'Wrong is Right'.
But of course, once again Skip disagrees (probably just to annoy me: Skip is no stranger to voting blatantly against the rules when he doesn't like the contributor): "Incorrect title capitalization per Rules". Seeing the rules as I quoted them above, the explanation he gives is inaccurate at any rate, I thought...
FYI: the profile I've submitted this update for can be found under 043396-103368. There is an old TV show whose title will likely send you off the end of the pier. It's initials are 'TWTWTW' or as it is sometimes called 'TW3'. Here's the all lower case of that acronym: that was the week that was Now, how would you capitalize THAT? Just can't stand to not take a shot can you? Geez. *I* didn't. I simply asked a question. But, this is perfect illustration of how people around here take offense at anything, whether it is an actual attack or simply a pointed question. I was told once back when I first started using FidoNet and Usenet, that if I didn't have a thick skin I may as well stay off the nets or I would have an ulcer in short order. That worthy was dead right. I learned how to use a technique called the "artful insult" which was designed to allow you to get your point across without actually attacking someone directly. It is a technique a lot of people here need to learn. | | | John

... is how I would apply the rules of capitalization. The first "That" capitalized because it is the first word of the title. "The" and the second "that" left lowercase, as the rules state. "Week" and both "Was" capitalized for being a noun and two verbs.
Great show, imported (and rewritten as a new show with a US cast) from the UK. I believe both versions featured David Frost. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Now, how would you capitalize THAT? (And I'm referring to the whole name, not the one word!) I think the present rules make this "That Was the Week That Was", which looks decidedly out of whack. Funny though that we have this special "title rule" only in English, for all other languages we are supposed to use the local grammar. For German that would mean capitalising the first word and every noun, for most European languages (including English) just the first word and all proper names. I would propose that if a new rule is to be issued, to make it consistent across borders. | | | Hans |

I would propose that if a new rule is to be issued, to make it consistent across borders. Vibro got it right. I agree that the rule needs to be changed to accommodate everyone as much as possible. Generally speaking, nouns, proper names, and verbs should be in caps, the rest lower case. | | | John

No apology needed. I thought that's what you meant, but felt a quick apology was reasonable if I had taken your comment incorrectly (and if it had been aimed at me). that was the week that was There's a show I'd like to have on DVD - both the 2-year UK series (1962-3) and the lone US Series (1964). I was about 15 when it aired her in the US. It paved the way for political satire on TV like the Smothers Brothers, SNL, etc. I do remember one David Frost skit as a preacher giving a sermon centered around the story of Jacob and Esau. I don't remember much about the skit other than the statement David Frost repeated several times that "Esau, my brother is an hairy man while I am a smooth man." | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? | Posted: | | | | You are discussing titles right? As far as grammar is concerned, titles are fair game. The rules differ between titles of books, music or film and it seems to be generally considered to be the author's decision how they are capitalised, or even capitalised at all ("saving private ryan"). I suppose the thinking is a title isn't part of a sentence and so emphasis has to be achieved without a paragraph to put it in context. So you end up with things like "The Squid and the Whale" as opposed to "Lost In Translation". Personally, I follow the cover as near as possible and alter them to make the list neat where it's ambiguous. No way am I typing "Se7en" for example because I want them alphabetised properly. I was so upset by "I Heart Huckabees" versus "I Love Huckabees" I sold the bloody DVD for a quiet life instead. I'm kidding of course. I sold it because it was pants. So basically, in the case of "is" versus "Is" versus "IS", pick whichever one you think is prettiest and don't contribute it! | | | Jon "When Mister Safety Catch Is Not On, Mister Crossbow Is Not Your Friend."
