I know it's been brought up in the past, but I do think custom genres would be a welcome addition to DVDP. Time and time again I find myself wanting to add a new genre when personalizing my database. Seems like a natural to me. Maybe to avoid a mess of genres being uploaded to the community database, any custom genres could be locked/limited to personal databases only.

I'd welcome it too. But, I suppose it would be safer for the database to just get a general consensus on some new genres most wanted, and then get those added as choices in a future version of the program.

I thought of that Skip, but my tags are busy right now helping my Daughter with her home work and are actually still (since v2.5 b915) trying to calculate the distance to the end of the universe.

Just seems simple enough to add a custom genre option. I sort my collection by genre first so being able add any prefered generes would be a nice touch for me. Locking custom genres automatically would save any garbage from being uploaded by mistake or intentionally for that matter.

I Agree, it would be nice to see some custom genres to be added. Also to change the current ones, and that all the movie, would aply those changes. Not only the movie's you then would be adding.

AS I noted Invisible, use the Tag system. Genres are verrrrry  subjective. Even IF there were to be custom genre added they would have to be strictly personal and not part of any Contribution. QWhich the Tag system does.

Maybe the answer is somewhere else but I allways wondered what defines the genre of a movie?

The backcover, IMDB ...

I personally alter the genres according to my personal style, lock the genres and keep them locally.

I'll mention this again, though it always dives faster than a lead balloon!

I'd like the genre field to be left alone and be strictly for genres. But I would like to see an additional free text field that could be used to enter a list keywords, which can then be searched on.

It can be done with tags, but may become cluttered. Here you could enter any word you wanted and link themes of DVDs. It wouldn't matter how little a keyword was used, or how absurd, because it would be applied locally to individual profiles only.

Personal preference half the time. I alter them in my local database as well, and I rarely bother to contribute any genre changes anymore since it's so subjective.

I really don't know how difficult it would be to code DVDP to automatically lock CUSTOM genres, but I think something like that would be the answer to allow for custom personalized genres while not effecting the community database. ANY and ALL custom selected/entered genres would be ((( locked automatically not allowing contribution even if you wanted to ))).

I do use tags for some like CHRISTMAS / HALLOWEEN / REMEMBERANCE DAY / BIOGRAPHY / CONCERT / MUSIC VIDEO  etc,,, It would just be a nice addition for me to be able sort these type of things using genres...

I guess a lot of people would have different usage for one or several local custom fields (besides the already overused notes) which could be searched and sorted and of course used in HTML windows and reports.
