I have a question that I can't find a clear answer for in the contribution rules. I added a multi-film collection (The Bronson Lee Za Karate Collection) and the first disc has 2 different versions of a film, the uncut Japanese release and the edited/dubbed U.S. release with a different title. Do I add a disc ID for the original Japanese version and have the U.S. Cut listed as a bonus feature, or do I create an alternate disc ID for the different cut of film. Reason I ask is there are releases in the system that have disc IDs for different cuts/versions of films and I'm not sure what proper protocol is for releases that contain multiple versions of a movie.

I would treat that first disc as a box set with two children, since the two versions have several different properties (runtime, audio, subtitles etc). Common features, if any, go into the parent. Disc ID for the parent, alternate disc IDs for the children. That's how I would do it.

I don't think the rules / Ken intended there to be different profiles for different cuts of the same film. Otherwise, rules like the following would be unnecessary:

"For branching titles, or those with multiple versions (e.g. Theatrical and Director's Cut) on the same disc, use the longest running time."

If he wanted different profiles for them, there would not have to be a rule to take the longest running time.

About "Alternate Versions", he clearly states: "Do not use for: Different cuts of the same film".

If you are not allowed to create alternate versions of the same disc if it contains two or more cuts of the same film, that means there is no legal way to add separate profiles in this case. It does not make sense to not allow different cut profiles if they are on the same disc, but allow them if they happen to be on two discs. Thus, implicitly, alternate cuts should never get their own profile.

It seems to me that this is more than just a different cut. I believe that Ken intended the rule you mention when the differences are just the runtime, with most other properties the same. That is not the case here.

If the Japanese version is the longer one, would you just profile that version, and only mention the English version as an additional feature, not mentioning the dubbing and other possible differences (subtitling, audio tracks, aspect ratio and what not)? That just doesn't seem right to me.

Yes, that's exactly what I would do and what is done by the majority of the community in regards to such profiles, at least in the online database. This situation happens all the time with HK martial arts films and I have yet to see a boxset type profile for one of them.

Maybe you're right. I haven't seen many such profiles. I just think that a lot of valuable information gets lost when done that way.
