i know there are at least a few XLobby people that would instantly pull the trigger on this version of profiler if there was an option to export xml to the version 2.4 format.  currently legacy versions of xlobby can not import movie databases in the new 3.0 xml format...

if anyone can offer any advice, i would greatly appreciate it.

You can use TomGaines tool called Cinematic Collection Viewer to import a 3.0 XML file, and then export it to a 2.x file. Haven't tried it, but the option is there in the menu.

My best.

Thanks for the tip on the TomGaines tool although I couldn't get it to work out.

Don't hold your breath, I can't think of piece of software that is that kind of backwards compatible. The program moves FIORWARD, you have the choice to go with it or stand pat, and with most programs, if you stand pat, at some point you will find yourself in a cave looking for your flint and steel. MS ceased supporting DOS, Win 3.11, Win95, 98 loooong ago, though occassionally you will still someone using it and trying to figure out why they can't get current software to work. Being able to port 2.x to 3.x is about the best you will get, and I would expect that likely at some point down the road that will go away.

Why not asking XLobby to update their software?

That would be appropriate, after all it is not for Profiler to make sure that XLobby can work with their software. If XLobby wants to beable to use Profiler data, it is THEIR responsibility to keep their software current to Profiler. Just as software developers must keep up with Microsoft, it is NOT MS' responsibility to worry about program functionality with their OS, if that were true there would NEVER be a new OS.

XLobby has updated their software (as I understand) to work with the newer output of DVD Profiler however the skins, plugins, IR programming, etc will be difficult to reintegrate.

I was merely stating a fact that if DVD profiler had an option to export the xml in the format of 2.4, there would be potential to gain customers...  There are already people working on new methods of importing movie archives into XLobby (and other software) and some users are moving away from DVD Profiler one of which is Ant.  I'm sure that there are many other commercial and home versions of software that are dependent on the xml output format of v2.4 as well.  Adding 2.4 output support would only help sell more licenses of DVD profiler, if it is felt that the development time to integrate this is not worth the payback in new sales then so be it.............

I've compared duplicate output xml files between v2.4 and v3 and many of the characteristics are similar.  v3 appears to handle actors differently as well as there are many more items in the database.  Would anyone be able to recommend a script solution to modifying the database?  I would not be opposed to introducing a new script or application to independently convert the output file.

I see the point, and I am with it, but ...

As the starter of the topic point of view, many free and old software that normally work with old export of 2.x, either no update for them, or they simply change core.

Like I use XL, but the new ver 3 is still in beta.

@RossRoy: Thanks for the link, very nice indeed, problem solved

@jryan15: It is working as it should, I just test it.

I think as Skip said, problem solved already

My best.

It works!  Thanks rossroy and abobader (as well as Tom Gaines and crew)!  After reading that abobader had it working, I went back to the site and found that the stand alone does work.  I had tried using the plugin version unsucessfully.

I still stand by my statement that if a simple "output to v2.x" function was embedded in the new program, many more licenses would be sold...

Thanks again to all who helped!  I'll share this link with the XLobby community.

Boy, I will second this.......I completely understand new software needs to move forward but a 2.4 XML database output would be a lifesaver.  I would assume there would be other programs/users out there that could benefit from this too.

Got it to work..........whew...alot of trial an error. Here is quick how-to post to save some others some time. I posted XL Forum...thought I would here too.

1) Backup your DVD Proifler v2.4 database
2) Unisntall v2,4
3) Install v3.x DVD Profiler
4) Restore in DVD Profiler 3.x using the above v2.4 database
5) Go ahead and sync online and any other house keeping and/or update items in 3.x
6) Go ahead and backup this database....not critical step but shoudl do it.
7) Go ahead and export to XML in 3.x
8) Download and run CCViewer ( http://www.tom-gaines.de/ ). It is a script so your AV may give you a script error but it is OK.
Note, the run-time errors on the bottom and fixes.....I had none....others did and say these fixes work. Note, CCViewer is
not installed....it is just a EXE to run.
9) Run CCViewer and create a CCViewer database
10) Then when this database opens (blank) go ahead on the Setting>Path Settings menu select DVD Profiler Path and point to the MyDocs>DVD Profiler directory.
In this same Settings>Path Settings menu select Cover Path and point to MyDocs>DVD Profiler>Databases>Default>Images
11) Now in CCViewer go ahead and import the 3.x XML file from step #4. You should see all your data, images, etc. come in. I had to click on teh cover art to show
front cover...it for some reason showed the back by default.
12) Now in CCViewer go ahead and export to DVD Profiler 2.4 XML file {this is the built in conversion}
13) Now, go into XLobby and F2 into config. Go to Database>Import tab and for point to the below:
Folder => MyDoc>DVD Profiler>Datasbases>Default
XML => {point to where ever the v2.4 export XML file is from Step #12.
14) Now go to Basic tab in XL and delete DB and hit import.
15) Done !

Setting of the Profiler path is not necessary. It was/is used for a functionality nobody probably really used (That in notes "../" is replaced with the Profiler path. It was useful for the html EpGuides with Profiler 2)

Left-click on cover switches between front and back cover. Right-click opens cover in extra window.
If you had selected a DVD first in the left list, the front cover would have updated/shown. With the left click you made, you also updated this window but also switched to back cover. I will update the program for the next release, that after XML import also the cover is updated.

Thanks Tom....nice program...really a life saver for us Xlobby folks who must have v2.4 XML support. Actually CCViewer was less trouble than XLobby...with the DVD Profiler directory change it really took some trial-n-error to figure this item out...........

    13) Now, go into XLobby and F2 into config. Go to Database>Import tab and for point to the below:
          Folder => MyDoc>DVD Profiler>Datasbases>Default
XML => {point to where ever the v2.4 export XML file is from Step #12.

Not sure I understand your comment on next release "that after XML import also the cover is updated".
If I export in DVD Profiler a new updated Collection.XML and point to that and import into CCViewer won't the coverarts and any/all profile changes come in to my current CCViewer database ?

How do you get a update notice on your link when new version is out ?

Thanks !

P.S. I guess alot of the XL folks on this thread are using CCViewer as a 3.x to 2.4 converter...probably a waist for the rest of the nice features it has.  Obviously, you've figured out this conversion process....any chance you have a utility that runs on its own that you point to v3.x XML and name a v2.4 file name and path and it converts ?

The collection.xml does not contain any images. DVD Profiler saves the headshots in the Images folder and calls them via a Profile-ID.
With changing the Cover Path in the CCViewer you tell the Viewer to also use the same images. This way you do not have to copy each new cover image to your Viewer folder.

Simply subscribe to this thread. Also, when a new version is available, a information window will appear, when you go to File->Update->Other Data.

I made the Viewer during the Profiler 2.x times. This is why it can import and export Profiler 2 XMLs. When Profiler 3 came around, I have implemented a Profiler 3 import but came never around to make a new export. A nice side effect of this is, that you can convert from 3.0 to 2.x.
It would be possible to make stripped down version for only converting, but I do not see any gain from this. It would simply do would you do now. That is:
1) Open Viewer/Converter
2) Import 3.0 file
3) Export 2.x file
By the way, these 3 steps are the only things you need to do if the only thing you want to do is converting the data. The image path change is only necessary if you want to see the cover images in the Viewer. They will not be exported.
