According to the rules:
Quote:
If a title is re-released with the same UPC, but different cover images do not contribute the new images. This includes cases where a DVD was initially released in a slipcase, which was later removed.

Is it possible for a DVD to be released without a slipcase, and then re-released with a slipcase added?  Which would mean the image from the keepcase would be the proper image.  Right? (because it was re-released)
The reason for this question is that  I have the Die Hard 2: Die Harder Spotlight series with a slipcase and it has the same UPC as the existing  profile 024543-147763 but the images are from the keepcase.  How would I know if these are correct for the profile, or if they should be the slipcase images?

Another question:  the discID matches the one in the profile.(330B97B6ED379229)  BUT, if I go to add a DVD using discID is shows completely different images, which suggest to me a re-release with a different cover.
So, even if I attempt to follow the rules where would I go to determine which one is right?

I know... not IMDB

I have all three Die Hard movies and the other two profiles show the Spotlight series slipcase covers, but this one does not.  I am going to add it locally but don't know if it should be contributed or not because I have no idea how to tell if it is a re-release.

I don't know about these particular releases, but yes - I have a DVD myself (Dirty Harry) that was released in a normal snap case and then reissued under the same UPC with a slipcase added.

The easiest way of finding out if you have a reissue or not is to check the "packaging & design" copyright on the back cover if it has one. The one with the earliest year is the one that goes in the online database.
If you can't find the year, the next step is to try and find the release date for your particular DVD and compare it to the release date for the other cover. Much harder to do!

Just been looking a bit into this and the Die Hard 2 with UPC 024543-147763 was released in Feb 2005. Do you know when your version was released?
If it was after 2005 then it sounds likely the slipcase has been added for a reissue. If your version was released in Feb 2005 then yes, the slipcase scans belong in the database.
The scan on the disc ID profile is from the recent release of the Die Hard boxset, so unless the same disc was issued in an earlier boxset, those scans are correct for that ID.

Northbloke,

Thanks for the help.  From your release date for Die Hard 2 and the release date given for Die Hard (2004) the Spotlight series must all be re-releases because the slipcovers have the original copyright (of the movie, not the release date, I think, because they are in 199x, can't read it with my old eyes and can't find the magnifier  ) and a "copyright 2007 Twentith Century Fox etc..."  which obviously wouldn't be there if it was released in 2005 or 2004.

I don't know where to find release dates so I will just keep my Spotlight series scans local, even though there are two already in the database, which I think are incorrect.  If I knew for sure I would submit the keepcase scans, but I don't.

Thanks again for the help.

Spotlight issued all three movies as Spotlight Editions, each with a different UPC for the original issue DVD.  I did the original Spotlight for the first one, and the update for the third one.  So, if the one you have does not have the slipcase, then it is NOT a spotlight edition, and should be updated acccordingly. That version, in fact, is already in the database, so just download it. and update as needed.

All three of mine have the Spotlight slipcases, but the images for Die Hard 2 are the same as my inside keepcase.  So, at least for Die Hard 2, there was not a different UPC.

If you read Northbloke:

The slipcases for all three have 2007 copyrights on the back, but the UPC for Die Hard 2 is the same as the version released in 2005, that is why I didn't change it to the Spotlight images even though it came in a Spotlight slipcase. (I changed is on my computer but didn't submit it)

I had no reason to question the other two because the images (after you made the update) were the same as mine, but I have no way to check to see if they are correct because I don't even know where to look.
You certainly have been doing this longer than I have, so any comments or suggestions are appreciated.  I don't want to make changes to someones hard work if I am wrong.

So far, I've never seen a Spotlight edition that didn't use a different UPC.  The new UPC, however, is usually on the cellophane wrapper, so you have to make sure to save that.  The cover art is normally the same picture, but the slipcase has the blue Spotlight border around it.  I just saw all three of the Die Hard Spotlight editions in the rack today, and they are all done the same way.

I got all three for father's day from WalMart.  NONE of the keepcase images match the Spotlight slipcase covers.  I have seen versions in keepcases that match the picture (without the border) but mine don't.

When I commented about the images matching the keepcase, I was talking about the downloaded images in the online profile match the inside keepcase but don't match the Spotlight slipcase. I reread my last post and realized it was a bit confusing.

The inside images are older dvd images and the outside are the newer versions with the Spotlight border around them.  I don't know why mine are different, maybe Walmart got a special price by letting them use overstocked dvds and put them in a new slipcase...who knows.  Anyway, I am not going to submit them, I will keep them local.

You submitted Die Hard, is your Keepcase pic the same as the slipcover pic?  Mine is not, if you look at UPC 024543-133490 that is what my keepcase looks like, but it has same UPC as your online Spotlight version. 024543-440864.  And the UPC is printed right on the DVD Insert sheet, it is not on the cellophane. And my Spotlight slipcase pic is the same as the one you contributed.

Edited to correct UPC

Like I said, all three of the movies sold at my local Walmart (where I bought 1 & 3) have the same picture without the border on the DVD cover itself.  The Die Hard series has been reissued to death and they always sell out, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that you could have a Spotlight version where the picture on the slip cover is not the same as on the DVD cover.  Either way, the UPC should still be different for the Spotlight version.  Also, don't always rely on them being the exact same disc content as previous issues of the movie either.  Sometimes they reauthor them and change the menu setup, and they have some that are issued as double features as well.
