I want to know what people think about the current voting system.

In my opinion a person should own a DVD if he is to vote for contributions on it - how else can he verify if the contributed data is correct?!

And, yes, I know that people can just add DVD's as owned without owning them, but you have to be pretty dumb to do that (again IMO) just to get to vote.

This has probably been debated before, but let's do it again....

I usually don't vote for my wish list profiles except when there is a public discussion about them in the forum.

Yep, it's been done...

FWIW I fully understand some updates are not verifiable without owning a title (so I wouldn't vote on them) but the massive majority certainly are.

If someone changes a profile to the Spanish title and overview without updating the Locality from UK I don't need to own it to know it's wrong
If someone tells me the Harrison Ford in Blade Runner is the not the one born in 1884 I don't need to own it to know it's right
If the source is quoted as the cover and I can see the cover scan it's not to hard to tell whether the update is right or wrong
... and so many more!

I agree... there is a lot of things you can easily vote on without owning the title.

Voltaire53... you missed an obvious one... Taken Cast and Crew from IMDB... I think I could safely vote on that one without owning the title.

It really is a matter of what is in the update. I only vote on things that are obvious when it comes to my ordered or wishlist titles.

I prefer only voting on titles i own. How can somebody e.g. verify cast and crew without owning the dvd? Oh yes....IMD*

This item should be associated with the question whether it should be allowed to contribute from the wishlist. Dunno if it's possible, I never tried it

Of course you can submit from wishlist or ordered... if not we wouldn't have pre-release info in the database. As I said before there is certain things that can be voted on and contributed on from without actually owning the title... Voting on has already been touched on... and as for updating you can do pretty much anything that is in the official press release... I have done that a lot myself.

Yup - thought I'd seen it somewhere...

Sorry for the hassle guys - but obviously there are issues here that would call for something to be done with the voting rules.

I still feel that you should own a DVD to vote on it, regardless of how easy it would be to verify information without owning it...    Personally I don't see the point in voting on something on a wish list (I don't even have one). I've seen lots of users owning a couple of hundred DVD's and having thousands on Order and Wishlist. To want thousands is one thing, but to imply that you have over 2000 DVD's on order is a bit far fetched I'd say.

Perhaps, Tongue-in-cheek, Berak. Al Gore had theresults of the US 2000 election counted, recounted , and recounted some more and still because he didn't like th results.

As for Trinitron, he is Swedish(or maybe Norwegian) user that used to delight in being able to corrupt that part of the database because of the relatively small number of users from his part of the world. There were thoise of us that would help deflect his attempts at such corruption. He would setup numerous, bogus screen names and accounts and vote from them to try and get his way. He would regularly get his screen name and his various aliases banned because of this behavior, at the time that IVS shut down he had become Trintron FX68-8, basically meaning he had gone through 8 different versions still trying to corrupt the Db, he has been fairly behaved so far here at Invelos.

We've already had this argument about six times.  Let's NOT do it again.

Very true, although I submit that "Ordered" is the same as "Owned" in a practical sense.

sure... in a practical sense it is. only meant that when it came to things to vote on that has to be verified I wait till the disc is actually in my hands.
