Stretch-O-Vision Petition Online

This petition is for the:
content providers (Cox, Comcast, DirecTV, ect),
network executives (ABC, A&E, TBS, ect),
program producers (Joss Whedon, David E. Kelley, Mark Burnett, Jerry Bruckheimer, Donald Bellisario, ect) and
program providers (Viacom, King World Productions, ect),
to stop the current practice of showing programs on "HD-TV" in other than their "Original Aspect Ratio" produced screen size and not to "Stretch-O-Vision" programing just to fill a 16X9 HD TV screen.

I also suggest that, if you agree, you send silly putty to your favorite program provider and / or the head of the FCC, asking that programs must be sent in their native / orignal screen format?

Wiki page about aspect ratio.

Could you illustrade(sic!) what exactly your point is? I know what OAR and 16x9 are, but can't make head or tails of your posting.

David is talking about the practice of stretching a 1.33:1 or 1.37:1 ratio to 1.78:1 to fit a 16:9 picture screen. This also means taking a 1.85:1 ratio or larger and zooming in to fill the screen and eliminate the black bars.

Mithi, it's a practice we don't really know in Germany. In the past I have also seen the opposite, where they broadcast widescreen films "squished" to get more information on the regular TV, making all actors look exceptionally tall and thin. maybe they still do that for 2.35 films...?

I had no idea that now, with 16:9 TVs, they started the opposite as well...

Is that something that happens during broadcast? I was under the impression, that some TV viewers do that - to make use of the entire real estate (as Roger Ebert recently put it).

The following link is at another website "DBSTALK.COM"
But a fellow has pictures of the same show from 'TBS'
One in Stretch, One as Broadcast locally..
The WTBS-HD/TBS-HD Link

Don't force me to have to watch a stretched image which makes for one 'Tim Allen' {Home Improvement on TBS-HD} look as if he lost weight to play the part of "Santa" in his three "Santa Clause" movies!

Online petitions are worthless.

Maybe not all.. but some do work! if for no other reason than to get the word out... the CBS show Jericho ...started off online and moved to real mail petition... and from what I have read CBS has already opted (which means the actors get paid something even if the show does not go on the air) all the actors for a third season... and the short second season does not even hit the airwaves till after the first of the year.

Unfortunately they don't show the same picture but I think I get the meaning. But this still leaves the question if this is broadcasted in this fashion or if the TV or settop-box for HD simly is configured wrong.
Because having black bars all around the picture seems ... pointless. You could zoom in without losing OAR.

No it is being broadcast 'stretched' as everybody that is receiving TBS-HD is having the same issues.. just look at the TBS logo in the corner of the images.. TNT is worse! they only stretch the sides/edge of the image/screen..the center is OAR but the closer to the edge you get the more stretch you have... and it is hard to capture a HD-TV screen showing the same image as I have been trying... just some like the 'filled screen (dvd talk full screen) and others like myself prefer the 'OAR'...

IF you supported OAR in DVD then you should also support it in HD-TV.

Correct, it is being broadcast that way.  It's not the settings on the TV or cable/satellite box.

However, this petition seems to be using the shotgun approach.  What possible purpose could there be in sending this petition to Joss Whedon or DirecTV.  It's just stupid.  It should be sent to the offending stations such as TNT.

Many content creators and providers have some say as to how and when their programs are broadcast, due to contract provisions, And maybe you don't remember how much news Michael Bay made about a month ago over the HD-DVD / Blue-Ray battle, so you never know whom might have the correct ear to speak to to get this into the news and the broadcasts corrected.

I thought you are were nuts and that no one in their right mind would broadcast a 4:3 native image stretched to fill a 16:9 screen...then I turned on crossing jordan on A&E HD last night. Who are the idiots that think making all the actors appear short and stubby is a good thing?

BTW, does anyone else remember when A&E was a good channel? it seems like a distant memory now...
