You know, I've noticed over recent months that, by simply taking the first step to achieve something, the world can conspire to make it happen. At Invelos, I did a small amount of work to try and get DVD Profiler running on Linux and Mac, and other people came to my aid and made it happen. I experimented with an 'improved' menu for the Invelos site, and someone with some far better ideas (and I presume experience) made it happen. I did a little work to clean up wrong locality profiles from the UK, and a whole bunch of people rushed in to help.

As someone who owned and supported a user application in my last job, I can see a lot of things missing from Invelos that would make life easier for the users: a user manual; more reactive FAQ; a better home for forum topics that aren't really forum topics (e.g. plugin list). Basically, a DVD Profiler wiki.

Well, as part of my wider self-improvement plan, I want to learn about various applications. As one of the things I wanted to learn about producing support material, I set up a blank wiki, and called it DVD Pofiler wiki just for kicks.

Anyone fancy helping to fill it, or shall I abandon it as another one of my lessons learned, move onto next?

If the answer is 'yes', how's about this structure as a starter for ten:

User guide
* Installation
  - Windows
  - Linux
  - Mac
* Tips and trick

Plugins
  - Official
  - Community
  - Popular plugins
  - Creating plugins

Contribution Tips
  - Case types
  - Studios
  -
* Feature requests
* phpDVDProfiler
* Reports

[at this point I got bored and decided to stop coming up with topics and structure - who knows, no-one may care].

I think the idea of an online manual/guide would be very useful. I think it would need only one person in charge though, acting as editor.
That is how a wiki works isn't it? Anyone can submit an article? Or have I got completely the wrong end of the stick?

One of our colleagues started this a couple of years ago, now I have to find the link again. Though I bet one of my friends will find it first or have it readily at hand.

Maybe it is possible to 'create' a Wikipedia-ish tool at invelos.com where (certain) users can update and add to the manuals where needed?

Not sure about the Portal either, but the Wiki is for everyone, so everyone can edit!
I do, see signature.
If I remember correctly the idea of an official DVD Profiler Wiki has been brought up earlier and Doug would have gladly transfered the already existing articles, unfortunately no response from Ken.

I still think it would be a splendid idea, see "why are some title underlayed green?" questions. Although I would like to keep Contribution Rules out of the wiki.

PS Between "Support" and "Database" in the navigation "Wiki" would be a perfect fit. If only registerd forum user can edit it the vandalism should be kept to a minimum.

I knew about Doug's resources, but not the wiki. Given that a wiki exists, but seems not to be much supported (by a wide community rather than by Doug), I think it should be written off as a bad idea. After all, if it was a good idea people would be using the one that exists.

And that's exactly the problem, to few people seem to know.
I still think the wiki would work were it on the Invelos-webserver or at least linked.

Well that's easily fixed. I don't think that Ken will have too much interest in hosting a wiki (I get the impression that he's more interested in managing a product rather than a community), but just lobby Ken for some sort of link in the support section (making clear that it is an unofficial resource). If he's not willing to do that, ask him to 'sticky' a topic in one or more of the forums that simply links to the site. I can see (at least) 2 from technical, 4 from contribution, and one from plugins that are begging to be replaced with a link to a proper resource. Just un-stick them and replace them with a sticks directing users to the wiki.

If there is support for it, I think that it can easily be made to happen.
