I just took a look at the voting on Shrek 2 and it's pretty weird for such a simple thing.  Ton of people voted and it's almost split right down the middle whether it came with a slip cover or not.  Does anybody recall if there was some sort of store exclusive?  I don't recall seeing anything this odd before on voting.

Bought on the day of release doesn't necessarily mean you've got the first release, sometimes the first release is already preordered by the great stores. So that not all customers have the chance of getting it. I had this here in Germany with a double-movie Box of the Bourne chronicles. Bought it on the day of release and got a KeepCase. First release was Steelbook

I guess that poses the question: if more than one version is released on the same day, both having the same UPC, but one with and one without a slip cover, which "trumps" the other?

This should depend on the distributor and what he names as first release...

I would agree with this, however, most times you probably won't find the information for which version the distributor says is the first release.  In this case, I would say, include the slipcover, and if your version doesn't have it and you don't like it, change it locally and lock that section, but don't submit a change.

Now to add a little more information to the "which release came first" topic.  As Stevegblair asked above, what if two exactly similar versions of the same movie were released on the same day, except one had a slipcover, which is considered the first release.  I work for a large retail store and can tell you this happens, sometimes with both versions at the same store.  Just recently I remember "High School Musical 2" came out, and my store got in several cases.  Most came with a slipcover, but 2-3 of the cases didn't have slipcovers.  Both versions got put out on release day, and both versions got sold.

Another problem is retailer exclusives.  Target had a 3-disc version of Spider-Man 3 when it came out that was $2-3 more than the 2-disc Special Edition.  It's the 2-disc version (with that UPC) plus a bonus disc inside a slipcover with a different UPC.  The problem is recently I've seen some of these in stores that have a sticker with the 2-disc UPC on the slipcover.  If someone were to enter that in (because they didn't want to peal the sticker off or couldn't), they'd get the info for the 2-disc version, which would be incorrect.  No fault of the consumer (or the retailer really, as the UPC sticker is under the shrink wrap.  Sorry, just a little rant about a complaint of mine.
