I am seeing some users make use soley of The Lookup Tool, which I can only call lazy. They are assuming that just because two names might be similar that Name A=Name B and the Lookup Tool provides the answer. Ken has already ststed that Lookup Tool is NOT to be relied on to be the SOLE answer. This user will not vote Yes to laziness, IF you cannot or will not DOCUMENT that Name A=Name B I will vote NO every time and I hope that Ken and Gerri will decline such garbage, even though I might be the only user on record. ASSUMPTIONS are going to get us in trouble one day...we will discover that Name A is not the same as Name B...perhaps two DIFFERENT people, father-son, etc and then despite the claims of some that they believe they are improving the database, such a discovery will call into question the veracity of all of our data. Please to those who are making these assumptions...STOP IT. And Ken and Gerri PLEASE decline any such contributions.

I always vote no to contributions with notes solely stating Lookup Tool as a source. If I check back a day or so later and look at other peoples votes then they often include pithy little statements regarding my vote in their 'Yes' votes or links to Wikipedia etc.

Whatever. No source? 'No' vote.

I couldn't agree more! If you cannot source the use of common name with something other than the lookup feature, you will get a NO-vote from me.

Of course I agree 100% that you need to be sure (and source) the 2 names is indeed the same person.

But when it comes to what common name to use you do go by the credit look-up tool all the way (unless you can document that the look-up tool is wrong).

You can see what Ken said in THIS POST

The lookup tool is not to be blindly trusted, however it does outweigh other sources, including autographs.  The common name is not intended to always reflect the "real name", but the most commonly credited name.

However, if a user documents errors in the database where the credit is not entered properly, that can and should be considered.  Better yet, correct the entries, assuming you own the discs in question, thereby correcting the lookup results.

I believe his comments have been that the Invelos lookup tool provides the definitive determination of which name to use, unless the Invelos data is proven incorrect.

On the issue of documenting that 2 names are the same person, he responded to a query from me with:

Cool. Thank you.

So how do we use this? I looked up Barbra Streisand (260 hits) and Barbara Streisand (15 hits). So I just state in my contribution notes that I looked it up in this lookup, state the results, and we're done with documentation?

In general, yes.  There will be cases that require a bit more perusing to make sure there aren't false matches.

I read his response to mean that many cases don't require documentation that A=B, but that some do. So I don't think Invelos requires that all name variants must be documented to be the same person. But it would be nice to see a clear definition of their expectation in this regard.

No, that's not the case. I'm explaining my understanding of his prior comments. I welcome any further clarification he or Gerri might provide.

I understand, that, james. And there are some that are relatively obvious. I am not going to even try to defone what is obvious. I will say, that because it might be obvious to me means that it should be obvious to you or some poor bloke on the other side of the world, or who does not possess my level of knowledge of regarding film personalities. If I believe that is true then you could justifiably believe me to be arrogant, but i don';t buy that as an excuse to avoid doing the work correctly. Unfortunately there are far too many users, sometimes yourself included who don't understand this premise.

I understand your position. You are advocating documentation that A=B for all names. I don't see that Invelos requires that level of documentation in every circumstance. Unless they clarify their position to match yours, there is a difference between your position and theirs as I understand it.

Other than a one-time exception, my contributions always use supplementary documentation from the Credited As Database to show that A=B.
