Well as of Christmas morning, when my girlfriend so graciously allowed me to finally open and hook up my Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD, I now am in the Hi-Def/HD-DVD crowd!!!

However my RCA Scenium HDTV has DVI input only, since it is about 5 years old as we speak!!!  My receiver is the Denon AVR 3805 and offers only component at best since HDMI was not standard when I bought this receiver!!!

So the question I need answered is does anyone know will an HDMI-to-DVI cable work to hook up my HD-A2 directly to my television while running Digital Optical to my Denon???

as far as I know it should work, the only difference will be that the DVI will not carry the sound where a pure HDMI would carry the sound as well as video

I joined the crowd too  this Christmas thanks to my son and daughter's gift for my wife and I...

Don't know too much about this Toshiba product at this point, but I did phone Toshiba today and inquired about 'firmware'  update and was told  to ignore plus to  check in occasionally to their web site, plus wait a few months.
I have a form printed out on their website as well to take advantage of the five free HD movie giveaway promotion from a small selection of titles. Plus the retailer had two HD titles given in the sale price of this unit as well, which included ' 300  which is a promotional version and is not the HD/DVD Combo disc currently on the market.
I checked the Invelos updates and saw it isn't there., this 300 HD version has NO UPC and unfortuneatly I can't read the disc ID for manual input as my DVD rom doesn't support HD ..

The UPconverison to 1080i  is amazing as my older titles look so colorful and bright compared to the just a few months back when viewed on my old analog TV with DVD 480 output.

I have a couple of those myself. I think I read somewhere where Ken said he's been testing HD DVD and BD drives to capture the disc IDs, so I'm hopeful these exceptions will be worked out soon.

I agree. It's really cool. I've enjoyed many of my classic DVDs this way recently.

Just gonna ask this here instead of starting a new thread, but since I just started getting HD-DVDs, I take it everyone is just adding their Hi-Def films, whether they are Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and keeping them local within the database???  Or am I missing something???

Hi-def is in the online DB.  All of mine are.

HDMI and DVI cables are both digital and in theory are interchangeable.  My PC has a DVI connection to my TV's HDMI jack.

HDMI is a superset of DVI. Some of the features of HDMI such as audio are dropped as you convert to DVI, but basic video should work fine. There are HDMI video modes that DVI does not support as it is RGB only, but as you player and display talk to each other it should all work out.

I use a HDMI to DVI adapter to connect from my Panasonic DVD player to my older Samsung plasma that only has a DVI input.

Welcome to HD DVD!
I have my HD-A2 connected to my sony TV with an HDMI to DVI cable and the optical from the A2 going to my receiver and have had no problems. The DVI connection on my Sony is HDCP compliant, if your is not it may cause some issues.
You can get a HDMI to DVI cable from monoprice.com alot cheaper than Best Buy or other B&M stores and save enough to get more HD DVD's.
As far as the database goes, if you HD DVD has a UPC number it can be added to the online DB. Some of the free HD DVD's did not have a UPC number and have to be added manualy to you local db only.

I came across something similar with the copy of King Kong I got with my player.  No UPC and no way to get a disc ID.

monoprice.com A new favorite website, cables are good and they are cheap. I need a HDMI - DVI cable so  yesterday I went to Radio Shack and they wanted $50.00, the sales person must have thought I was crazy as I was laughing when I walked out of the store.

A friend gifted me with a copy of Episodes 1-3 of Planet Earth on Blu-ray. It must've come free with a new player. No UPC.  Fortunately, I have the Planet Earth box set on HD DVD.  Anybody want just 3 episodes on Blu-ray? Free to a good home...

Edit: Update. Good home found.

I paid more than that for my cable.  (It's ok. You can laugh at me too.  ) Thanks for the new website.

I won't laugh this time, monoprice is great I got 2 6 ft HDMI, 2 6ft Componet and 2 6ft optical with shipping for under $40.00, I would have got the other one also but I had not upgraded the cable box yet.

Great - I was just about to buy from Best Buy - which is over three times as expensive as these guys.  My order was just accepted...

Good old Sony omitted an HDMI cable from the PS3 I got for my kid at Christmas...  Good job I had one from one of the bedroom TV/DVD pairs!  I must say i like the PS3 though once it was working... I guess that means I've joined the Blu-Ray camp!

Happy New Year Everyone!
