When I do a search for James Kelly in the credit search, the following shows up with credits:

Quote:
12 Angry Men 1957 5-050070-005172
12 Angry Men 1957 8-712626-009092

Comparing that to IMDB, it looks as if the following James Kelly's are tied with the following movies (of those I could find):

James Kelly (V)
12 Angry Men 1957 5-050070-005172
12 Angry Men 1957 8-712626-009092
12 Angry Men 1957 8-712626-009092

Die 12 Geschworenen 1957 4-045167-007161
12 hombres en pugna 1957 086162-162329
12 hombres sin piedad 1957 8-420266-930088
12 hombres sin piedad 1957 8-420266-992000
12 Hommes en colère 1957 8-717438-130309

James Kelly (I)
The Beast In The Cellar 1971 I25478B00D01506B7
Tomorrow at Ten 1962 I82360B54E8AC0F50

James Kelly (III)
Hoop Dreams 1994 8-716777-052310
Hoop Dreams 1994 5-014138-286781
Hoop Dreams: The Criterion Collection 1994 715515-016025

James Kelly (XII)
Patterns 1956 617742-104493

Now, the question is, is the credit look up giving me all of the movies a James Kelly is credited in, or is the credit look up giving me all of the movies that that particular James Kelly is credited for (meaning if I own 12 Angry Men, The Beast in the Cellar and Hoop Dreams, the same James Kelly is given credit for all, even though it's incredibly likely it's not the same person).

Alienhere is the deal we use the ACTUAL fikm credits, What was the last film that was produced by IMDb...ANY. They are well known to be filled with errors of all kinds. This is why you use the credits EXACTLY as they are listed On Screen,  instead of the various preferences of users, you will also take note that there are NO sources for ANY data at IMDb, t least none I have ever been able to locate, unlike our notes which is designned to serve as sort of a bibliography to back up the data.

As fpor the same name with different actors...THAT is what we use BY for./ Are ypu suggesting that you cannot find any data for BY for any of them.

You changed your question from James Kelly to John Kelly. So, the first question is how do you know that John and James are the same person, that must be documented.

I edited the Johns to James, it's James Kelly I'm referring to.

I'm quite aware of what the contribution rules are regarding cast, and that is not my question.

My question is the James Kelly listed in the database credited with all of those movies or not?

If it is, in fact, one James Kelly credited numerous times for movies that different James Kelly's were in, no biggie, I'll update my database with the IMDB standard and not contribute it. At least, that way, in my personal collection the cast and crew will be more accurate than the Profiler DB until something better than a BY is an accepted practice.

If, however, the the online search is simple shooting out the movies A James Kelly has been credited in, cool beans, that's even better. It saves me the time of updating a couple thousand DVDs.

Alien:

That is why I suggested that you document the various James', usually the best way is via Screen shot, until someone decides to verify the various James' and obtain BY data IF we can on any of them, then they are the same. Remember this a user-built database, nothing happens magically, if we don't do it it won't happen. So, it sound to me like it's time for you to start digging. Put another way...TAG, you're it.

Thanks! And, no, I'm afraid I won't be tracking down the BYs. There are no less than 25 "James Kelly's" on IMDB and I'm not tracking down the DOBs of them.

When I was checking Sammo Hung Kam-Bo on the Profiler online credits, I see he's credited with 303 flicks, and Sammo Hung (same person) is credited with 328. That's a frightening discrepancy -- especially since I'm only into disc two of ~2000 and have already noticed three incorrect actor credits. Sadly, this has convinced me to not trust the cast/crew database (especially considering the number of low-budget and indie horror films in my collection).

That said, I will happily continue to contribute cover art when needed as I plow through my collection, but I think I'll just build my personal database with the IMDB guidelines because, even with its inaccuracies (which I freely admit there are), it is -- hands down -- still the most reliable source of cast and crew information out there. I'm pretty anal about my collection (as I'm quite sure many people are who use Profiler), so consistency and accuracy are pretty important.

Ironically, this makes me like the program even more, because it affords me to make the changes to what works for me, without having to effect any other person's collection, so thumbs up for that.

Thanks again for the info.

For my local database, that is also what I decided to do. In fact I use IMDb's names, but without roman letters, and use real birthday dates when known, and fake (or approximative from a screen capture) for those that remain (I have only five in that case). With that, all my actors are linked without using the "credited as" feature and the CLT, which is a source of pingponging.

Agree also for the abitlity of the program to accept data each user wants. It is really powerful for that.

Alien Redrum,

To answer your real question, yes all entries with the same 'name' are listed by the credit-lookup-tool. So James Kelly and James Kelly (1980) and James Kelly (1922) will all list.

Skip,

Please try to read the question before you answer it.

You don't have to.  If you choose to, you only need to find the BYs for the guys in your local db.  Since you are going to separate them anyway, why not do it in a way that helps the on-line db?
