I proposed a change in the rules. I put it in the Contributions Rules Committee, where it seems to be the right place. But many users do not belong to that committee, and I think their opinion is also to take in account.

Quoting surfeur51:
Quote:
I propose to add the following sentence in the introduction of the rules (part in bold):

"The authoritative source for information submitted should be the DVD itself.  Please don't submit content from a third party database, and always verify the specifications printed on the cover.  In both cases, errors abound, so always verify the information directly from the DVD whenever possible.

Rules have to be followed in almost all cases, but do not intend to propagate obvious errors, or typos. So correct documented data will always be preferred. This point supersedes all other rules.

These rules apply to all kinds of profiles, but there are two special cases where the rules need clarifications. Where you see the icons shown below, refer to the special instructions at the end of this document. These are titled Movie Box sets and TV Series on DVD."

I generally agree with you here, it is against common sense to copy a typo.
Makes me almost shiver if I have to do that, but so far I always did it.

The only thing that we have to be careful about is, to not misinterpret things.
And the possible misinterpretation is what some users fear.

Though I can understand the intent, I think adding this statement to the rules as you've proposed is much too subjective, in particular the use of the word "Obvious".  What is 'obvious' to one may not be so to others.  Also, the final sentence is much too over-encompassing IMO

Obvious errors ? Try that :

Nicale Kidman
John Wayne
Bruce Wilis

How many people will miss the two errors ?
And I wrote correct documented data to derogate rules.

The last sentence is to avoid endless discussions about other parts of rules saying "reproduce exactly..."

Sorry, but this modification would open a can of worms in my opinion.

I agree with that as well... luckily going by this poll most people agree with us.

Count me in as well.. I don't see what the big fuss is about; for the online the rule as it stands is fool-proof, and leaves no room for interpretation. If someone wants to correct typos they can do so locally.

Nay - leave it as it is I say...

The results of the poll are clear, so I suppose Ken will not retain the idea. Anyway, I do not regret this poll (and the same in the other forum) that allowed me to understand better the attitude of some users when I tried to make things progress to a better quality of data. As I notice that the majority do not mind to have errors in their movies data since they privilege the object (DVD = plastic disc in a case) to their content (the movie), I will no more intervene in a contribution forum where the majority do not share my passion for cinema. That will please all those who were irritated by my "carping". I sincerely wish that all those who voted against my idea have fun playing with their odd data.  As for me I had since a long time deserted the online, except to contribute titles that were not yet contributed at all, so nothing will really change. I'll of course continue to share on local features of the program, which make dvdprofiler so interesting for a movie lover.

Why do you always have to take a swing at people that don't share your opinion? The point is not about having the "right/wrong" data in the database.

I do not take a swing to anybody. With today's discussions in three threads, I realized that I totally disagree with the majority of this forum users, and decided to no more intervene on the subject, as it is useless to promote my ideas and boring for those who do not share my passion for accuracy. End of story.

I can understand that but if you read your other post your are taking a swing at the users who do not share your opinion. That's at least how it comes across, or how I read it.

I understand what you are saying Dirk... as I was thinking the same thing when I read it. But I blew it off as I was thinking it was a language barrier type thing... as English isn't his native language. At least I would hope that is all it is.

English is not my language, so perhaps I did not use the proper expressions, but I still see nothing that take a swing to anybody. For those who speak french, I can PM them a text for which I would be sure to use all the proper subtleties.

My apologies to those who were offended by what I wrote.
