Currently, there are over a hundred profiles for this film in the database. Only two of those use a colon in the title or original title field: "Die Hard: With a Vengeance". These throw off the CLT numbers for all people involved, so I'd like to settle this one way or another. People who've done this are quoting the episode descriptor rule:

Quote:
Episode descriptors are part of the title; separate them with a colon and space; e.g. "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock".

So, what is it? Does that really apply here?

Strictly from the rules "Die Hard: With a Vengeance" would be correct.

Sadly this franchise doesn't bother too much with naming conventions and puts the name of the franchise anywhere in the title. Compare sequel 4 and 5: "Live Free or Die Hard" and "A Good Day to Die Hard" those titles are not compatible with the rule at all.

So by all means let this be an exception to the rule.
Otherwise I can see contributors coming up with "Die Hard: Live Free or".
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I'd have thought the fact there's over 100 without and 2 with would give you the consensus view on this one...

Wouldn't that be "Live Free or: Die Hard"?    The rule does not state the order of franchise and episode descriptor at all

I went with "Die Hard with a Vengeance". I've never seen it written as "Die Hard: With a Vengeance" and I think the preposition takes away the need for the colon.

I agree with Rizor... I always read it to be Die Hard with a Vengeance.

I believe this should be "Die Hard with a Vengeance".  I do not think "with a Vengeance" is an episode descriptor in this case.  I believe the series just uses titles/phrases that include the words "Die Hard"

The title should be "Die Hard with a Vengeance".

In the Star Trek example, "The Search for Spock" is an undertitle to "Star Trek III", and thus separated with colon.

"with a Vengeance" is not an undertitle to "Die Hard" – it is a part of the main title "Die Hard with a Vengeance".

This. ^
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Why discuss about real title ? What we have to do is just apply the rules, as we do in other fields where we invent cast names just because the rules require to invent them... And the consequences on CLT are much more important than a few episode descriptors...

That's why I used the word consensus which is what Tim has asked for...
