As my sister-in-law's living room is an odd size it does not lend itself to conventional furniture placement and therefore I need some help in determining the ideal (or as close-to-ideal) 5.1 speaker placement for her.

This is a drawing of the living room.  Not exactly to scale, but close enough for you to see what my issue is.  Her "main seating spot" is the sofa at the end away from the tv.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Peter

Apart from wireless speakers (the best) ,, is this room just below the attic or is there a crawlspace/open basement underneath?
That would be ideal for concealing the wiring to a specific area of the room.

With the two open doorways it is a bit of a problem running wiring under base boards or carpeting to the area you need for the two rear speakers.

I'd keep the sub woofer and front/ centre speakers near the TV up front. This will allow for Ideal closer dynamics for all  the fronts.

If the attic is available you can fish the wire up and across the attic and then down thru the walls to a permanent area for the rears., same can be said for a crawlspace or open basement ceiling--across the ceiling then pop the wire up thru the Living Room floors for your rears.

Post back with your eventual solutions ..

Wiring won't be a problem... there is a crawlspace underneath.  All of the speakers a floorstanding so I won't be mounting them.  Any suggestions as to where to place the rears??

If possible I would move the TV infront of the sofa or maybe angle the sofa straight in front of the TV, firs option is the idael one, but might not be possible, or prefereble for other reasons. Then I would just place the suround speakers behind the sofa, the front and center will be a given. If the has to stay this way you will be much better of with a stereo (2.1) setup, becase your suroundspeakers will suffer from bad angles, bad faces and time delays wich is going to be hard, maybe impossible to tune out. You could of course check out the new 1 speaker suround systems developed, among others Yamaha and se if that might suit this room.

Thats a tough one.  I would rearrange the room to fit the surround sound better, but thats just me

How many people normally watch at her house?  Is it just her?  we know where she normally sits, but what others?  I ask because when I set my stuff up, I took into account where I sat, my GF, and my guests.

Depending on the system for the delays may not be impossible.  Mine came with a mic that a place in the listening spots and it adjusts for the distance and all that.  Not perfect, but better than what I could so.

Yeah, thats what I'm talking about. but even with the mic the time delay has a surtain span plus and minus. and you are still gonna have trouble with fasing. The way the room is today one of the surroundspeakers have to be on the other side of the wall to be in correct possision. (as i see it anyway) That's why I mentioned this one speaker system wich reflects the sound and gives the illusion of a speaker there.

I wont try to rearrange your furniture and no consideration for wiring since you didnt say how you had to run it.  Bad furniture arrangement, but the attached should do pretty good after you balance the system:

Looking it over I don't care to see front speakers over to the side of the room like that so my map would like like this:

I wouldn't suggest the one speaker systems at all. I tested the Yamaha and it suffers from missing clearness - especially if you can't place it parallel to the walls - as needed here...

With the front speakers all clustered that close together, you won't get much directional separation, if any, which defeats the purpose of surround sound.
