Ken,

This post is sort of a reference point for you. Linked in here are discussions we've had regarding various rule implementations - if a topic here is linked, it means we've come to a concensus, and are waiting for your input before proceeding any further.

TV CAST & CREW:
http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=45211
-The consensus decision thus far has been to credit main cast at the top of the cast list. By main cast, we are referring to anyone appearing in the opening credits of the show. Then, dividers would be used for each episode - anyone not in the main cast would then be listed under each episode they appear in. We need your approval for this one.

COMMON NAMES:
http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=37108
-Consensus decision here is to use iMDB as a starting point for the common names. Obviously, there would be individual cases we would need to debate in the forum, and we of course would do so, but we would need your approval to go forward with this system. The "Credited As" feature would be then used to tie together multiple variants of one's name (various names a person has been credited as) and promote database accuracy.

TV CHILD PROFILES
http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=8868
There's no real concensus at all. Generally the people who ARE in favour of child profiles at this time do not want the video/audio/disc data etc removed from the parent profile, and no box set links in the parent. That said, there is a large population who do not want the child profiles at all. We need to know how, if at all, these child profiles are to be handled please.

No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

Well, this one is partially right - there is no concensus.  HOWEVER, there are a lot of us who DO want child profiles and want them linked to a master via the boxset function.  This issue should really be dealing with clarifying what constitutes a box set.  Virtually every commercial seller of DVDs calls TV season sets "box sets".  Except here, where there is some sort of denial going on.  Resolve THIS and most of the issue about child profiles goes away.

If by HERE you mean the IVS Forums, then you are correct.  HERE on THIS site Boxsets are defined in the CURRENT Rules as "more than one film".

In the Contribution Rules Committee Forum Ken had this to say regarding this topic.

Using any single source as the authority, while tempting, may result in legal problems.  On a case-by-case basis, looking up names on one or more sites (or simply in an Internet index search) to help determine the most popular reference is acceptable and shouldn't cause any legal issues.

Another alternative is to simply total the credits by Credited As to determine the best name.  If Bob Smith is credited in 70% of his films in our database as "Bobby Smith", that's the name he should have.  Thoughts?

The TV child profile issue seems less about what people want as a consensus and what people want to do rule-wise.  Yes, some people are passionate about wanting the child profiles, but the other side (where I count myself) seems to be more about the rules.  I can only speak for myself (but I believe Hal falls into this and correct me if I'm wrong, Hal), but I don't use child profiles for TV sets and remove box set data BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THE RULES SAY TO DO.  Whether or not I like a rule, I follow it.  The rules as written say TV sets are not box sets, so that is what I do when I contribute.  If the rules stated differently, that is what I'd do.  I have no problem locking things locally, but as far as I'm concerned, the online database should be what the rules state and any deviation should be locked locally.  If Ken changes the rules, I will change how I contribute, plain and simple.  I do believe you'll find that is from where the real contention comes.

I use child profiles, but I too remove box set data from parents if I'm doing anything else to them. For me it seems ideal to have all the information in the parent and children both, with no box set links in the DB, so that people can form profile box sets without much hassle if they'd like, but those who only want the parents aren't affected.

But then this has all been said before...

Until Ken gives an official answer here, we're still in limbo.

This would be the easiest way. Have the boxset profile contain all the information and then have the child profiles for each disc available if people wish to use them. That way whatever people want the information is available. This would also keep everybody, no matter what side of the argument they were on, happy.

PS I'm on the side of having child profiles for each disc of a TV Series Boxset

That's fine as far as it goes.  I agree with his other idea, though, of using whatever name is most often seen in the "as credited" field.  As he says, that is most likely the name they go by anyway, and it eliminates the propensity for ping-ponging because of personal perferances.

I could live with that.  Make all multi-episode and multi-movie sets boxsets, allow all the information in the master, AND allow child profiles.  This is one area I've always felt very strongly about, as most everybody knows, and if *I* can agree to a compromise, so can everybody else.  Those that don't, are only interested in having things their own way no matter what.
