It might help if we modified the Crew job list as follows:

Screenplay by: Adapted screenplays, taken from another medium
Written by:  Original screenplays, written directly for the screen

In cases where the credit reads 'Screenplay by' or 'Screenwriter' and we know it was written directly for the screen, as in the case of '2001: A Space Odyssey', use 'Screenwriter' as the job role instead of 'Written by' in order to follow the way the credits are presented.

John:

I am NEVER in favor of trying to give to separate definitions to the same set of words. If then only confuses users. Screenplay by or Screenwriter or Teleplay by=Screenwriter.

This has been covered but if you look at the chart aside from the notes, which INTENDED to try to clarify, yoiu will see that the role of Screeplay by is listed as Credited as Screenwriter and ONLY Screenwriter. There is NO other listing for it under any other heading. So perhaps your No vote was correct after all, I may have misunderstood.

Uh... Ken recently updated the rules to allow for 'screenwriter only' entries...

So to boil this down, we should strike the "where there is an Original Material By credit also" condition from that rule?

In general I agree, but Hollywood has thrown us a curve here by using either term for essentially the same thing, and I'm sure we could come up with many examples to show that.  What is confusing people MORE, in my opinion, is trying to force them to use a specific definition when what they see could be either one.

The trouble is, joh people keep trying to apply a variety of standards Academy, SAG, whatever to our data, which have little or nothing to do with our standards. The ONLY way to fix this is with the Open Crew listings, but i don't want to go there again, BTDT.
