Quote: I click on the "Refresh Updated Profiles from Invelos"
I was used to do updates for profiles if I am on one. So today I had to give this option a try as the profiler tells my I didn't do ANY update for XXX days (altough I do some evry day). I won't let it run as I am not sure where I placed locks. Well, now I am at this long long list of updates and check every single one. I am just throught the first 20, and 9 (!) of them the preview tells me once again "No differences detected". I'll do the whole list, but the problem mentioned in the first post is still present. Altough there is not any difference, profilertells me that I need to update
It is a horrible work! The list tells me about updates for 2949 profiles. Don't know how long I will need to check all of them, but I think everybody can imagine how I feel about wasted time with all those "No differences".
So far I am through the check of about 1000 updates. And I feel kind of disappointed about the way the updates changed! More than 50 % are "No differences detected", and most of the rest is locked due to personal reasons. I even can't understand the image updates anymore. IS there any update if the the new images have exactly the same dimensions and file size than the old ones? Well, it will last another few hours to check the rest of the list, but so far I can ensure you: Most of those updates are senseless and absolutely not neccessary as there ARE NO UPDATES for anything! If there's no differences detected, then your local database won't be affected. First/Middle/Last name changes or First Middle/Last name changes won't affect your local database either. deBont or DeBont is another example of that too. If you yourself don't contribute profile changes, you're basically at the mercy of those who do. You can also right-click that green arrow and "Skip Update" when you land on that profile. You can also lock your profiles (to not accept ANY updates) and keep your information local. That sounds like it would save you a lot a stress and frustration. Accepting updates is completely optional. Sometimes profiles are updated by the most miniscule of things: spacing in an Overview or how the program reads italics in an Overview is one that pops up on my updates a lot. | | | My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT. FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that. Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it! | | | Last edited: by huskersports |

@huskersports: I don't know how many of my posts in this thread you read. Well, doing no updates for a while causes action. Suddenly I got a popup "you didn't do updates for..... days" and the window which normally only comes up if you choose "Refresh Updated Profiles from Inevlos" pops up. Sometimes updates make sense, sometimes not. My problems are that the window shows me 2949 updates, and for the half of them the check shows "No difference detected". If you got a bigger collection like mine, all the mentioned mistakes, errors, troubles cause wasting time. |

Correct. Perhaps I was not clear, but that was exactly my point. Plugins can help in the interim between Invelos updates, but cannot substitute for changes to the fundamental structure and functions of the main program, and certainly cannot fix issues that don't have agreement on the solution in the community. Examples: name linking, unicode, handling of non-western names, separation of the DVD metadata from the movie metadata, and the list goes on. The other point I was trying to make, was that sometimes people have been reluctant to consider using plugin(s) as a workaround, partly to give Invelos feedback that the function is really needed, and whether the plugin did it the right way. | | | Thanks for your support. | Posted: | | | | Two plugin features that developers pushed Ken hard to add are custom fields and custom profiles. There are a few of plugins designed to support those features.
Using those features, one could:
- Add any kind of personal, movie or DVD metadata that you feel was incorrectly left out of the original Invelos database. Over Christmas holidays, several years ago, we did extensive testing to make sure those fields become as close as possible to enabling all database functions - filtering, HTML sections, exported in the XML, part of backup and restore. They do not appear on the collections tab or in Reports. But it was a good start.
- Create a non-contributable custom profile. That profile is fully operational as part of the database. And almost all functions of the database work on them (except contributions). Using it, a person could develop a scheme for splitting out Movie metadata, streaming media profiles or anything else. The hope was, with experience, the community could come to some kind of agreement to guide a future implementation in the main program.
Sadly, I think those hopes are no longer realistic. No real points to this post - just sharing some history. Some of us worked so hard to get Ken to put stuff in that might someday answer the needs that people were demanding, but could not agree on "how." | | | Thanks for your support. | Posted: | | | | Just FYI, here are two functions available to plugins:
- PerformPendingDownloads - ClearPendingDownloads
If either of these functions would be useful to you in controlling your update process, I wouldn't mind experimenting. If you are using any of my plugins, I could make a temporary change to allow you to control those two functions by timer, by day, on database load, whatever, and see whether it helps you at all. | | | Thanks for your support. | Posted: | | | | None of them clears the problem! There are still countless profiles with the active green arrow, and most of them still show me "No Differences Detected". So as this happens so often, it can't be MY problem, that's a problem of the database.
Next point I recognized: I created countless child-profiles. As I don't want double data, I only have cast & crew in the children and delete them in the parent profile. And I can't count the number of updates where cast & crew of the parent profile comes again and again and again and again...
I'd appreciate a function kind of "deactivate updates for all locked items". This would reduce my so called "updates" by at least 60 %. When I started this thread, I hoped that there allready is something inside profiler I didn't know or didn't recognize yet just to avoid countless hours of (not existing) updates + like the title of the threat says "relieve the server". I am still sure that a solution for all those unneccessary downloads (as at least 60 % of them are no updates for me, either "no differences" or re-felling data of parent profiles or just updates I contributed) just imagine the reduction of the server load from nearly 3000 updates down to 1000 |

Just decided to add these two functions to HTTPJolie - a way to communicate and control DVD Profiler without a plugin. (oops, see edit) So it would be easy to see if they could help you. Edit: well that was not accurately stated . HTTPJolie, is itself a plugin, but to use it - you simply type into any web browser on your network. | | | Thanks for your support.
