I can hardly believe that a regular like Skip is now trying to defend himself by referring how the title is mentioned on the cover rather than simply applying the rules (let alone accusing T!M of not following them).

I still think we need to change the rule so that we capitalize all of the words in a title and all of this.

I would not like it, not for English titles and specially not for French and German titles. I have not enough knowledge about other languages to say anything about their title capitalisation.

And why is that necessary, Achim. Because Hollywood will typically show ON THE WATERFRONT, RUNAWAY BRIDE, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, etc., etc., etc.

Skip

For me it's rather freshing to see how the "master of rules" tries to defend a decision, which is not really understandable for me - and most of the folks around.

But to you Skip: I think it would be of a great improvement to this discussion, if you could reread your statements in this thread and draw a conclusion out of it. For me your argueing underwent the following steps: you were refering rules, which are not here; to defend that you change to the statement "I'm not interpreting" only to rechange again and interpret (!) the characters on a cover - which is totally against the rules...

This is a user database and polls are usually the quickest and easiest way of gauging the users' opinions.

I can't follow this argument.

To get the quality, we all want, we have decided to set up rules and follow them. At least IMHO we should not try to interpret or weaken rules with polls. We should try to improve the rules to a state, where they are clear and sufficient to the needs.

... I know, that there are big egos against an evolutionary process, but let me dream...

Ummmm, could you please point me to the section of the rules that tells us polling is mandatory for improving the rules ?

I would object to this as well. We get the capitalization right almost all of the time. I'd hate to have to recapitalize 300,000 titles simply because a few people have a hard time understanding it.

Whether you like Dan's idea or not, the rule has to be rewritten.  The rule says not to capitalize 'joining words'.  As we all know, the proper term for that is a 'conjunction'.  The problem is, the examples given are not 'joining words'.

'of' is a preposition and is a 'function word'
'the' is a definite article and is also a 'function word'
'a' is an indefinite article or a preposition and is also a 'function word'
'in' is a preposition, an adverb or an adjective...none of those uses are 'joining words'

I don't know who wrote this rule, but they screwed the pooch.

I agree. But let's write a rule that fits more closesly with the consistency of our current practice rather than rewriting in such a way that all titles have to be resubmitted.

I think it was Ken (or IVS).  That phrase "joining words" was in the old guidelines and we didn't change it as I recall.

Well, he is a programmer.  Grammar is not their strong suit.

Just noticed it "current practice", program changes aside. Are you suggesting that the practice might change, next week, next month, next year on what basis pray tell.

No.

With the exception of a change on possessives, we've entered titles the same way for as long as this program has been around. I propose we stick with that method. Tried and true. No funny stuff. No quotes. No little "is" words. No Capitalizing All Of The Words. Just normal.
