| | Posted: | | | | Since there are so many movie lovers out there, I thought this would be a great place to pose a question. I have a couple of nephews that are 9 and 10 years old. They are so utterly fascinated with the "gang" lifestyle and the gestures and the walk and the talk, but they're too young to fully understand. I'm wondering if there are any good "gang" movies that really show what being in a gang is about and how they're treated and what life is like, etc, etc. The fact that the movie will be gang-related means there will be violence and bad language, but are there any good movies that don't glamorize gangs and might be good for a 10-year old? Or if you have any other comments, that would be great. Thanks!!! |

Shows what gang life was in the 70's/early 80's A more fun gang movie is the Wanderers but now we're stretching back to the 60's ... maybe even the 50's  Neither of which would help unless you wanted to show them how things have changed over the decades.  | | | | Last edited: by lyonsden5 |

If its to show them how utterly stupid it is to get involved with a gang, then I would recommend finding the nastiest, most violent thing you can and scare the hell out of them while it will still do some good. Soft pedaling gang activity is definately not the way to go. | | | John

But honestly, try to search for a documentary that played on National Geographic about the gang MS13... this was actually pretty tough to watch, because a "life" doesn't mean anything to any of the members of that one... and they're getting more and more members all over the US as well now. Any episode of OZ w*rks also. Results of gang activity if you are lucky enough not to be kilt (killed) . "New Jack City" could work as well, although it's not connected to the typically depicted South Central style of modern street gangs.
"Menace II Society" also comes to mind.
And I heard that "Tsotsi" is supposedly very good as well, though I haven't watched that one (yet).
"Baby Boy" by John Singleton also makes a good effort.
And I remember watching a movie with Omar Epps a few years back, "Conviction" was its German title, about a gang member turning around, based on true events. That one should definitely bring your intended point across.
However, none of the movies covering this subject is IMHO suitable for 9 or 10 year olds. If they're actually already interested in this kind of "life style", I doubt that watching a movie depicting these events is in any way the correct approach.
