Try "Blood in, blood out" or "Bullit". Both of them show the harsh life in gangs.

Bullitt: 2 Disc Special Edition

Regions: 1, 2, 3, 4

Released: 5/31/2005

Anamorphic 1.85:1

I'm guessing this is the wrong "Bullit"?

Yes you are  . The one I am thinking of is with Mickey Rourke

Blood In Blood Out is excellent and shows the downward spiral of gang life and how it can and usually does hurt yourself and everyone around you. Definitely an all time favorite movie, but there is alot of nudity, language, drug use, jail rape, and violence aplenty. Basically the story of some young teens through their adult years and how each grew up and in some cases grew apart or even ended up in prison because of the lifestyle and bad choices they made. Can't recommend it enough.

Colors was another really good one.

And I heard that "Tsotsi" is supposedly very good as well, though I haven't watched that one (yet).

I would also suggest Bullit, but definitely not Tsotsi.  Its not quite suitable for a 10 year old.

Theres always mafia type gang movies, which kind of have the same effect/message, but in a slighly different setting.

I don't think any of the movies mentioned in this thread so far is suitable for a 10 year old.

City of Gods, as have already been mentioned. But I also like and would suggest A Bronx Tale...

"The Wild One" -- The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club vs. The Beetles... Marlon Brando vs. Lee Marvin.

If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Gotta say that some of the recommendations I wouldnt consider "gang" movies Boyz N the Hood Definitely not a gang movie.  If you want realistic I would recommend trying to find the HBO Undercover Bangin in Little Rock and the Follow up Show that they did those are as real as it gets without having ANY nudity, sex ect only language, violence, ect..  But really I think most of the Gang Movies would be "above" a 10 year olds comprehension.

While there are some "good" "gang" movies I really dont know if ANY movie would do what you are looking for.

OK I found what you should show them I took the synopsis from Amazon.

Quote:
Gang Wars: here is a war waging in Little Rock, Arkansas. A town where the homicide rates are higher than in both New York and Los Angeles. Welcome to the setting of Marc Levin and Daphne Pinkerson?s series of award-winning HBO documentaries Gang War: Bangin' in Little Rock and Back in the Hood: Gang War 2. Gang War: Bangin' In Little Rock chronicles the lives of rival gang members. Allowed unprecedented access to this culture, the producers of Gang War offer a frank, unblinking look into the lives of local Bloods, Crips, and Folk. Back in the Hood: Gang War 2 follows Leifel Jackson, one-time leader of the OGCs (Original Gangster Crips), as he is released from prison after almost a decade behind bars. Jackson was one of the targets in the 1993 drive-by shooting captured in the first "Gang War" documentary. Now he is trying to live straight and make a positive difference in his neighborhood? but every day is a struggle.

You read my mind.  These were the two I'd recommend.  Old school but still good... "Can you dig it?"

Sorry, not up on my 21st century gang movies.

My favorite gang movie is the Warriors. Shows what gang life was in the 70's/early 80's

A more fun gang movie is the Wanderers but now we're stretching back to the 60's ... maybe even the 50's

Neither of which would help unless you wanted to show them how things have changed over the decades.

What you are trying to do is along the same lines as the "Scared Straight" programs from the early 1980's to the late 1990's.  As someone with a psychology degree I can tell you in complete earnest it will not work.  If anything it will further encourage the behavior that you would like to prevent.  Taking children into jails gave them the feeling that it was not so bad and they could do the time.  Most films even when they are attempting to deter them, encourage these behaviors.  If you want to stop nephews from this behavior the best things you can do is praise them for the good things they do, punish them for their bad behavior and be a positive role model.  It has been proven time and time again, kids with positive role models who are honest with them, are less likely to use drugs, commit crimes, or even join gangs.

GANG TAPES could be a possible choice.  It's been a few years since I've seen it, but it might be what you are looking for.  It's an independant film (released by Lionsgate) shot from the perspective of some gang members who carjack a vacationing family and end up with the video camera left behind in the car.  One of the youngest members ends up with it and starts documenting everything going on, including an escalating war with a rival gang.  It doesn't glorify the life (nearly everyone ends up dead in a brutal manner).  There is no sex (which is in fact the punchline to a scene where the kid sets up the camera to record losing his virginity, only for the battery to run out).  Most of the unsuitable nature would be the language and violence (which isn't very bloody due to the lower budget).  The filmmakers had a lot of help from ex- (and even current) gang members in making the movie.  The DVD is 031398-819523 if you want to take a look.
