There are a bunch of threads regarding scanners, so I just picked one to shout out a "thanks" to all that have given this advice. I finally broke down and got one ... holy smokes - so easy now!

(@Blair I got the recommended USB version. Is was so cheap, you could probably justify getting one instead of suffering any issues with the PS/2 model).

I purchased an 'Opticon OPN-2001' barcode reader about 18+ months ago from collectorz.com for about US$100 when they had them on special. An upgrade of the firmware enabled it to be used as a true USB HID device emulating a com port keyboard wedge. Works on everything, everytime without a hiccough.. even those pesky little QR codes that are now appearing on DVD/BLD covers. I posted instructions for use with DVDProfiler in a thread about 18 months ago. It's also perfect for 'stocktaking' (or taking inventory in your lingo) with DJ Doena's DVD Inventory plug-in as you can set the device to read batches and read the file into the programme.
Veni, Vidi, Visa, Vista, Voodoo, Vino
I came, I saw, I bought, I installed Vista, I'm now haunted, I need wine

Apologies to Julius Caesar in 47 BC who said  "Veni, Vidi, Vici" - "I came, I saw, I conquered."
