Owned Total Profiles 7141

How did determine those numbers, simply by using tags.  I have tags for box  sets, box set member, TV. genre, etc.  Under TV I have child tags for documentary, movies, music, mini series, TV series. etc.
Under music I have child tags for the types of music dvds.  By using the "and" and "or" settings you get intersection or inclusion of tagged items. You can determine how many dvds in any category.
Click on a tag, you get the total. Double click on a tag, it removes those tagged items from the count.  it's also easier to create different dbs if you like. I keep one TV series and min-series, movies, test.  By excluding TV and box sets, I get an alphabetic list of movies, even the ones in the box set are listed in alphabtic order.

I guess I still have a lot to learn and explore in the program.  I didnt realize I could do all that.

There is a thread that discusses tags and gives the "how to"...but I couldn't find them. Help!

It's not a thread, but there are explanations for the use of tags in the "DVD Profiler Community Knowledge Base":

Call me crazy, but I treat box sets of films and TV series differently.

Box set with several movies:
Separate profile for each title - number each title/child profile - no number to parent profile

Box set with TV series:
Separate profile for each disc - only number the parent profile - no number to child profiles

Why?  I want to know how many different "programs" I have, so a box set like "Sam Peckinpah's The Legendary Westerns" counts as 5 (since it contains 5 films) but a TV series like "Grey's Anatomy: Season One" counts as 1 (since it's a coplete season).

This is my method as well.  I have the child profiles for TV series so that I can see what episodes are on which disc without pulling out the box. Now that I've added an episode guide to the layout I use, I'm adding the disc #'s into the guides and then the child profiles can go away.

I include the child profiles in box sets as I file my disks in folders (external to their original packaging) and this gives me a location for each disk. I do not as a rule use the profiler to count my disks, as in general I count box sets as 1 item. Some box sets in my collection have, however, not as yet been spilt, but they will be in due course.

The other reason for this is because I like to see the cover art for individual disks where there is art for them, and also it makes episode handling for TV series easier if there are more profiles to log them against. I do not number the parent profile for box sets as my collection number is also a reflection of where the disk can be found and is not used as a counter.

I have not yet made full use of tags and once I have figured out how I want to do them I will, and then I should be able to get an accurate count of DVDs. Currently I accept that my list is slightly inflated, but not as badly was could be supposed based on the first entry in this thread.

This is how I keep profiles in my database.  I do not contribute them this way, because too many people have hissy fits if it is not the way they interpret the rules...

Movie collections:

profile for each movie.  Why? Because each movie often has its own audio formats, video formats, definitely cast and crew differences, etc.  Even though cast and crew can now be differentiated using seperators, this doesn't work for audio/video.  I want a profile telling me the audio/video of a movie title.  The only way to do that is with multiple profiles.  This I apply even with multiple movies on 1 disc.

TV seasons:

To me, this is based on packaging.  If individual discs are in seperate keep cases, I have a profile for each disc.  If more than one disc is in a keep case, they get one profile.  Why?  The art work is important to me, and I want somewhere to capture each cover image.  It doesn't matter to me how many discs are in the case.
With digipack seasons, I usually do only 1 profile.  However, I have often contemplated going to the disc level because there is great art all over the inside of many of these packages and I'd like to capture it.  Sometimes I do go to disc level if the art is extremely compelling.

i feel ponyboy is right ,for those of us who proud of our dvds ,it makes your collection look the way it should ,i wish you could put your box sets in a diffrent section on dvd profiler instead of mixing them with your movies .i have over 3100 dvds if i counted each disc that number would be over 5000 ,i not saying the way we all do is wrong or right, but dvd profiler open up a can of worms, that makes this a 2 way street.

I do it because I want to know what is on each disc episode-wise.  I do not count each disc, however, I count only master profiles (single movie profiles are master profiles, btw), so a TV boxset only counts for one profile just like any movie profile.

John and I agree.

I want as much information about every disc I own, have ordered, and is on my wish list. In that box sets of films have information about each film on the children, I want that information in my local Profiler database. In that credits and cast lists on individual TV shows are often on the children of the TV series box sets, once again, I want that information in my local Profiler database.

Nowhere in your poll does it give us a choice to pick "I want all the information possible on every disc I include in my Profile database." That's what I would choose.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I see now you can buy the whole series of Homicide Life on the Streets for $100 consist of all 7 seasons and has 35 DVD's So to me it  sounds retard to be counted as 1 entry. When it should be at least counted as 7.

That's just your opinion.  But, you can do it any way you please in your local database.  That's the beauty of Profiler.

The rules dictate (they do now, and they have done so for years) that this should be set up as a parent (box set) profile, with seven 'child profiles', one for each season. John is right, however, in that you can handle it any way you want in your local database.
