What if nobody wins the high-definition DVD format wars?

You mean the Blu-ray Disc association will win this format war. I'm not sure why everyone give Sony all the credit/blame for BD, when there's a long list of companies involved in the actual design, production and patents on the format.

Regardless of the BDA, Sony is and always has been in the spotlight.  And without the PS3, I think things would have turned out very differently.  Of course it also would have turned out very differently had they lived up to their promises of PS3 sales.  They've taken most of the bad press (deserved or not), so it's only fair that they take the lions share of the credit for this (deserved or not).

I don't disagree with that.
