What Would the Correct Common Name of Cast or Crew, with a Suffix. Would there be a Comma before the Suffix or without comm.
This website about Grammer shows that it is not used anymore.
http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/commas.asp
Rule 7. Use commas to surround degrees or titles used with names. Commas are no longer required around Jr. and Sr. Commas never set off II, III, and so forth.
Example: Al Mooney, M.D., knew Sam Sunny Jr. and Charles Starr III.

Use the comma.
Let me qualify that just a bit. I would check the CLT for both results and see how much crossover we have (titles that are on both lists).  I presume that moist of the times based on my own experience that you find a lot of, Jrs. also picked up as Jr. for the same title, this is likely due to some users getting away with IMDb data. There are very rare actors that I am aware of that would actually list their name as XXXXXX Jr. but they are rare indeed...so far. But we won't really know that until we get ALL of the data in correct form per film credits. So most of the time I would lean on , Jr. or whatever.

Grammer does not matter in this case. As what you are talking about is standarizing the info. Which is against the rules and Ken's clarification statement. What we have to do is go by the Credit Look-up Tool on this site. the common name has to be the most commonly credited form of the name.

Can't do much about peoples votes other then explain you are going by the CLT and Ken's clarification... unless of course they/you can document that what is in the CLT is not correct per the end credits.

I agree but still get voted down even with majority in favor. I didn't seem to have this Trouble when Ernie Reyes Jr. was Accepted.

Skip hits the nail right on the head: check the C.L.T. for titles appearing under both name variants. If a title appears under both, chances are that the comma-less entries will be incorrect, IMDb-mined entries, while the entries with the comma are actual as credited entries. Thanks to IMDb, the comma-less name variant will almost always be declared the "winner" by Invelos' "credit lookup tool", so you'll really have to check for this. A quick glance will often show you that dozens of entries incorrectly contain the IMDb-mined, comma-less name variant.

Apart from that, I'd still really prefer it if we could set a standard for entering suffixes. I don't mind if we choose to do it with the comma or without it, as long as we pick one. It seems utterly ridiculous to enter one suffixed name one way, and the next the other way, just because the first has 51 credits with the comma-less name variant against 49 credits with the comma, while the other has it reversed. I really hate the inconsistency, and the ping-ponging that goes with it. This is an excellent example of that ping-ponging: Darknite is probably just propagating the incorrect IMDb-formatted name variant, which will all have to be changed back once a few more profiles have been corrected. If we could just settle on a standard way of entering these - as we've had for years - there's be no need to do this. Again: not only would I really, really like that little bit of consistency, I also think we need it.

As I see it, this is one of the biggest flaws of DVD Profiler. Achieving correct linking and making proper use of "credited as" is hard enough for most of us, let alone for new users. Let me paint you a picture... You're new to DVD Profiler; you've just downloaded it for the first time, have installed it, and you're ready to enter some discs. You start with five films that all star, say, Robert Downey, Jr. However, after adding these five profiles, you notice that when you click on his name in the first profile, you get a window that says he appears in three profiles in your collection. That's strange - you're sure he appears in the other two as well. Further research shows you that this is caused by the fact that he's credited - and listed - as Robert Downey Jr. in three of these films, and as Robert Downey, Jr. (with comma) in the other two. Furthermore, from experience I can tell you that whichever variant you choose to attach a "common name" to and try to contribute it, every way will attract no votes. Either based on the credit lookup tool results, or with the argument that you're propagating an incorrect IMDb-formatted name. In short: a quick peek at the wonderful world we call DVD Profiler...

It's really not possible to explain our "better solution" to anyone outside this little group of forum regulars. Instead, I'm worried we're just driving contributors away with this ridiculous inconsistency. Setting a standard for something as basic as this is the only way of getting all users on the same page. One single line in the rules - telling us to either use the comma or not - and we'd never have to argue about how to enter a suffixed name ever again. But hey, it's probably just me...

Yet your Ernie Reyes Jr. contribution was incorrect, too. True, the CLT shows a strong majority of the comma-less name variant, but there again, you'll notice that most titles appear under both name variants, indicating that most of them probably just contain incorrect IMDb-mined entries. It may take a while, but I guarantee you that your update will have to be reversed at some point in the future: comparing the titles under both name variants in the CLT tells you that it should be Ernie Reyes, Jr. Had I seen it, I would have voted against your change citing that as my reason. Again: this way you could go ahead and "correct" about every suffixed name out there - and in at least 90% of those cases, you'd simply be propagating incorrect IMDb-data, which will only need to be changed back again. Again, if you want to do this, at least check the titles that appear under both name variants, and use that in your decision whether to change the "common name". That'll really cut down on ping-ponging...
