BulkEdit V2.17 Available

  - Multiline editing of Notes/Overview errors corrected
  - Added Icon to BulkEdit form
  - Added Tool 4: Regex search / replace
  - Reminder to backup database only once per session
  - Added Next to the search / replace (Tool 2)
  - Fixed bugs in integer find/replace (e.g. CountAs)
  - Changed find/replace (Tool 2) to exact match, as Regex (Tool 4) can now be used for substring edits

Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to figure out why 3 special characters including "." cannot be typed into Notes / Overview in BulkEdit.

I just purchased DVD Profiler but have run into an issue with importing the database from the old application I was using.  I downloaded and installed BulkEdit and exported my movie database from Movie Label 2010 in XML format but when I attempt to load the XML file via BulkEdit, I get an error that the file is not formatted correctly and that the object reference is not set to an instance of an object.

I tried to export my database in Excel format and then removed all columns except for title.  I re-saved the file as an XML but still cannot load the file in BulkEdit.  Is there anything else I can try?

I saw your post in the other thread, and Mithi's advice was really good.
(1) If you have no personal data, such as purchase price, notes, tags, reviews or other such private data, then there is no need for BulkEdit. Keep in mind that ALL of the official movie info comes from the Invelos database. There is no need to preserve anthing like title, relase date, running time, cast/crew, etc. It will all be overridden by Invelos anyway. In this case, you might want to look at Mithi's scripting methods for extracting the UPCs, or you can do it in Excel. Once you have a list of UPCs, DVD Profiler can bulk load them for you.

(2) If you do have such personal info, then I can try to adapt BulkEdit. Depending on how different the format is from what I alreday support, that will take some time - so patience is in order. I would need a copy of the XML (or a good representatve sample), and a brief heads up as to which fields contain "personal" info that you care about. I will send you my email address. In this case, having the UPC/EAN is very important. If you don't, BulkEdit has no way to help you reference the Invelos data, so you will get "Manual Profiles" that contain the personal info. Then you will have to manually update the UPCs so that the Invelos data will download correctly.
(Edit: I'm up early, seeing a family member off to the airport. Going back to bed now. Will mess around with this later if I get your file.)

easiest way would be the Excel-list if it contains the UPC. Just delete everything else and save it as a TXT-file and open that from DVD - add DVD to collection - Add by UPC - Add multiple
If not just open a command-line, switch to the directory with the XML and type
findstr "SEARCHSTRING" collection.xml > temp.txt
instead of SEARCHSTRING you have of course to use the name of the UPC-field in your XML, most likely UPC or similar. Then open the temp.txt in an editor or Excel and get rid of everything but the pure numbers.

A little question on this one: How complicated is such an adaptation?
Might it be easier to write a XSLT for that matter? Because bashing something together that will transform a given XML to the DVD Profiler XML with the few fields that are necessary would take me ~15min.
How would BulkEdit react if he gets such a neutered XML with say, only <UPC> and the <PurchaseInfo>'s?
(Let's leave the whole locality-guessing for another day)

Well it will definitely take more than 15 min. The locality guessing is automatic - except during DVDP import, since I assume locality is correct when it comes from Profiler. I see no reason we can't both work on this - I would probably like to have the ML import built-into BE anyway.

When I collect personal data, I also create watched and other events that are necessary, custom studios, genres and MediaTypes. Anything that doesn't fit neatly into DVDP, I add into notes, such IMDB rating and url. There is also a "Tagline" which I figure should be the first line of Notes. The ML fields also includes a field for trailer path, which I wil also add to Notes in LoadDVD filepath format if a file, and as a URL if a web site. With all due respect, I think it will also take you substantially longer than 15 minutes, because there is not a one-one mapping to Profiler fields. You can see the ML field descriptions in the user guide on the ML web site. But we haven't heard from the OP about the need to preserve personal data. I agree that XSLT is the easiet way to create a UPC list. You could run it through DVDP directly, or through BE if there are multiple localities.

Well, it doesn't look good. The people at ML seem to have a pretty different idea how an export should look.

Darklink, please tell me that this is because I have an unregistered version or just exported the samples ML provided.

OMG I wouldn't have believed you if I hadn't seen it for myself!        What a mess!

Anyway, when we get the full export from the user, we'll just hunker down and do it! Yeah!!!  (Yes, I have been drinking ...    )

BulkEdit V2.19 Available

- Added creation of manual profiles when UPC is blank during CZ import
- Added a way to interrupt long XML import: place the mouse cursor somewhere over the progess bar and wait until you get the Cancel dialog.

Unless you care about those things, no need to get this one. Other updates are anticipated soon: ML Import, some other stuff I have been messing with ...

BulkEdit V2.20 Available

Sorry for the frequent uodates, but I have a list of stuff I have always wanted to put in - so when I get to a place where I need the function myself, I code it and publish. You can skip this release if you are not interested in the new functions. There are no bug fixes to old functions at V2.19 level.

New Function - ScrapeGoat

This function is selected from the Tools Menu. This allows you to "scrape" profile IDs from a DVD Profiler User's online collection and quickly add them to your collection. I put this in because I sometimes come across a user that has a bunch of titles I don't have, and I want to add them to my WishList, but I never seem to get around to it. ScrapeGoat makes it easy to do right away.

Once the flagged profiles are added, then you must do an Invelos Refresh in order to download all the data. Your selected profiles are flagged in the selected collection to make it easy to perform operations on the newly added profiles.

The ScrapeGoat function could actually be a separate plugin, and I could do that if requested.

Following is a screenshot.

Awesome! As always!

Sounds like it could be a seperate plugin, to me    Anyways...

I have a new request

Found I'm going through my collection doing edits, flagging profile by profile. Could we get a "Flag all child profiles, to the flagged profiles" function? Basically it would flag the selected profile and all its children and all the childrens child profiles, and so on. It would speed things up, me thinks.

Senario: I flagg a couple of master profiles. Go to "Collection -> Flagged -> [this new function]". Wohla! All children to the flagged profiles have been flagged. (onto Bulk edit doin magic )

[Edit]
Just saw your post over in the Beta forum about SideCar! :D
Thanks, I'll check it out!

@xyrano

- Thanks for the kind words. I'll wait to see if Ken picks this function up before making a separate plugin.
- Collection / Flags / Flag Children has been available since V2.15. Can that work for you? You just have to filter first. I could also add Collection Flagged / Flag Children, where you bracket top and botton as in "Flag Between."

I tried the flag children function but the result wasn't what I was excpecting. Also this function resides in the Flag menu list (which now seems logical for what it does). I was looking for something smaller then that. In order to use the Collection / Flags / Flag Children I first need to filter out the profiles I do not want then do a flag children instead of just flagging one profile and do Collection / Flagged / Flag Children

I tried Flag Between a couple of times but I can not wrap my head around this one. I thought I flag one somewhere on the top of my list then flag another some profiles down and it would flag all inbetween, but that wasn't the result. Some profiles outside the intended range got flagged. How is Flag Between intended to work?

I have no hope what so ever that Ken sees the light about making HEADER_VARS and or the DP_vars complete.

(1) Ok, I thought about it last night. Easy change - will do.
(2) Flag between: (a) flag one profile at the top, (b) flag one profile below, (c) Flag Between - fills in flags between them, including children. You would get the same results by (a) flag profile then flag above, (b) flag profile then flag below , (c) invert - 2 more mouse clicks than flag betwen. Either approach works best when you clear all flags first.
(3) For SideCar, if you forsee a need for other, I would prefer to get a request for a batch, rather than one at a time. It would make it easier for me to do as many as possible at one time - that being said, if you really need another variable, speak up (I know how shy you are    ) By the way, the best argument for getting the new variables supported would be to create some cool HTML sections for us that you couldn't do otherwise. Then you will get others supporting your request.

Funny, I walk exactly into the same trap. Flagging Children of flagged profiles seems to be more logical to mee too.

I stumbled on the solution by accident when I had 2 profiles flagged, and suddenly it seemed logical

Well, can't speak for SideCar (not tried yet) but BE definitely saved me from an hour of stupid clicking through Profiler-windows just now. I recently bought all 7 seasons Deep Space Nine and Voyager and had to wrestle in all the child-profiles and harmonize the Titles and SortTitles and such. So from me too, the warmest thanks to Mediadogg for this useful plug-in.

Only question I have right now: I can set a CollectionNumber in BulkEdit, but how (if at all) can I activate the "None" marker for profiles?
