Define correct, Unicus.

Correct: free from error; especially conforming to fact or truth.  The 'fact', in this case, is that the name of the company is 'Twentieth Century Fox'.  Their use of the abbreviated form of the word...'20th'...in their logo, does not change that fact.

Quote:
20th is ON SCREEN AND the back cover as well. Why should edit and re-edit ad infinitum just because some user wants us to. And further sets up poll and then publicly states that he is going to ignore the poll AND the Rules to boot.

What we see on screen, and the back cover, is the LOGO.  We do NOT use the logo form for any other studio.  Why should we do it here?  'Universal' is also on the screen and back cover.  Why can't we use that?  'DisneyDVD' is on the screen and back cover.  Why can't we use that?

Using 'Twentieth', instead of '20th', is not only consistent with how we deal with other logos...which is a HUGE plus...it is also 'correct' which means it follows the rules.

There you go - at last a shimmer of insight: indeed there is no question. If the cover says "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment", the correct entry for that distributor is "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment". It really is that simple: there is nothing to figure out. Why is that every time someone wants to correct a piece of data, a group effort spanning ten pages is needed to convince you first? I honestly don't know why we even bother anymore.

Eleven pages of discussion and the vote remains 37 for 20th and 35 for Twentieth (or vice versa, since I can't see the vote while I'm composing this message).

It's good to see there is such a clear concensus.

PS:  I don't know if anyone mentioned it before (and I don't intend to search through all 11 pages to find out), but when I look at a title that uses "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment" with the layout I'm using (called Invelos Default - High Definition, but I don't know if it's the "standard" layout or not) the last "t" in Entertainment doesn't show up.  It's there in the data, but it doesn't show up on screen.

Perhaps James, you enjoy senseless editing and expense of time and effort on a needless change that brings no additional value to the database. I don't, my time is very valuable and i don't waste it. So if there is some value added beyond some user thinks it should be then please explain it because I see NO value added and certainly won't waste my time on it, nor would I be willing to ask any other user to make such an utterly senseless change.

You added this piece to your post after I responded and I just caught it.

Why is your argument about 'value added'? If 'Twentieth' is the textual format of the studio's name as shown on the cover, that's what we should go with. Unicus has laid out the issues of going with logo names. In this case 'Twentieth' would be correct. 'Value added' doesn't come into play. It's either correct or it's not. That's the way we play the rules for every other piece of info.

Quoting skipnet50:

I still want to know what value is added and no one has answered that yet. Why should spend thousands more man-hours changing data that is already correct. Simply because 20th is different from Twentieth....PUHlease.

None of the date is 'already correct'. All of the current data is either wrong or blank.

If we go with '20th':

# of studios that have to be changed: ALL which contain '20th' or 'Twentieth' as distributors
# of distributors that have to be changed: ALL of them, since the field is currently empty

If we go with 'Twentieth':

# of studios that have to be changed: ALL which contain '20th' or 'Twentieth' as distributors
# of distributors that have to be changed: ALL of them, since the field is currently empty

As T!M pointed out, now is the time to get it right.

It's not 'edit and re-edit ad infinitum'. It's a change from an old convention borne out of convenience and field length considerations to a new form based on the accurate textual name.

You are totally ignoring the FACT of why it was done fir Fox and that the Rules regarding thhe use have not been changed AND the OP has not the authority to make such a change on his own, which he has publicly announced the intent of doing. There in lies the problem, Unicus, who the hell does the OP think he is? He asks a question and then publicly announces his full intent to completely IGNORE the results of said poll and IGNORE the Rules to boot.. That kind of CRAP does NOT sit well with me.

I am not ignoring anything.  In fact, I was quite up front with the fact that this was done because 'Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment' didn't fit.  If I remember correctly, and I usually do, '20th Century Fox Home Entertainment' didn't fit either...until the field was expanded.  Well, the field has been expanded to a point where the 'correct' name now fits.  Since it does, we should use it.

As to the rule not having changed, I don't know what you are talking about.  Technically, because '20th' is the abbreviated form of 'twentieth', our use of '20th' was against the rules.  Because we are populating a new field, this seems like the perfect time to correct that rule violation.  JMHO.

Unicus:

It is an abbreviated form, granted. It is NOT an abbreviation, there is a difference. As I said, however, my anger is not at you, but at the arrogance of the OP who publicly announced that he was unilaterally changing the Rules to his LIKING, that he cannot do, and i will not tolerate. Nor will I ever support it, simply because of THAT SINGLE comment. I condemn that behavior on his part in the strongest possible terms.

In my db, I have '20th Centur Fox Home Ent'. That is, I believe, the incarnation prior to the current field length.

And I agree with your conclusion, needless to say.

That's right, james. Ignore the crass behavior of the OP. It only makes me angrier and causes me to ask questions which will not be publicly asked.

The user has also made good on his attempt to unilaterall6y change the Rules and the Studios thread. So don't expect me to BACK OFF, it won't happen. He was and is waaaaay out of line. So have fun with your red arrows, matey.
