We haven’t released anything new on this awesome, premium downloadable content since way back in May, so it’s high time we gave you a little update.

For all the latest info, we’d recommend you check out the very latest Crash TV.  It’s your chance to hear all the latest news on the island direct from its creators.

This first shot shows your arrival point on the island.  From here, you can make out the awesome cylindrical tower referred to in this Crash TV Episode 15.  With the right car, it’s possible to drift all the way to the top of this tower and back again.  But you’re unlikely to drive down, because this location is all about massive jumps.  For a while, we considered naming it Big Air Island!

The building to the right is the hotel we named after one of our die-hard fans.  DBC9MX earned the right name the hotel after winning the Downtown Showtime Showdown competition and chose to name it after his son – Taylor J.  You check out the footage in Crash TV for a better look at Taylor J Towers.

This second shot is the first time we’ve shown you the view looking back down from the island towards the bridge and mainland Paradise City.  Our mantra is ‘if you can see it, you can drive it’ – which means that even the bridge to the city features multiple levels and massive jumps.

The construction yard in the foreground is loaded with gameplay and the scaffold at the top features in one of the island’s most memorable pieces of gameplay.  Everywhere on the island is like this.

This third image is the first look at the other side of the island, featuring the palm trees that give it a distinctly tropical flavour.  The unusual shape of the lighthouse, and the massive ramp in front of it are more tell-tale signs that the geometry is more than just scenery.

And finally, here’s our favourite shot.

This shows the kind of action the island is built for.  The scaffold towers in the construction yard can be climbed and all the hoops can be jumped.  If you want a taste of what the island is all about, head for the airfield, quarry or beach in Burnout Paradise right now and imagine an area the size of Downtown dedicated to that kind of gameplay.  The car featured here is the Dust Storm.  It will be made available at the same time as the island.

We’d mentioned in a previous podcast that this would be free content, but we can now confirm that it will be premium paid-for content.

Here’s why.  We never expected to create anything this ambitious for the island, but as it progressed we got more and more excited about what it could become.  (In fact, that’s the story of all our Downloadable Content.)

Big Surf is the culmination of everything we learned creating Paradise City, and we want it to bring you a truly spectacular new experience – the highlight of a year of incredible premium content.  Burnout already delivers incredible value for money – literally hundreds of hours of gameplay with your original disk or PSN purchase, plus more with the free Cagney Pack and free Burnout Paradise Bikes.

We want Burnout Paradise players to experience the greatest support ever seen in a console game.  We’re transforming not just Burnout Paradise, but the whole Burnout franchise through DLC, and we appreciate the support we know you guys will give us for our paid content.  We think it’s worth it.

Next week, we’ll bring you the first of our “Paradise City Boroughs” guides - Downtown Paradise.  We’ll cover the whole of Paradise City borough-by-borough in some detail, culminating in a big reveal of the island in the new year.

I'm not sure about the Party Pack, Legendary Cars or Toy Cars.  But I know I'll be picking the Island up for sure.  And as a developer, I can understand why they've decided to charge for it. It's unfortunate since they've been saying it would be free and they're annoying a lot of their customers, but I'm ok with it.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be the first one in line to buy the add-on(s). It's just the point that you should not promise something, then welch on that. I understand that they created a beast that they didn't expect to create, and I am okay wirh that, it's just you should never promise something over and over if you cannot deliver.

As for pricing....

I can see the Party Pack being about $9.99, the car and toy packs about $5.99 each and the Island around $14.99 to $19.99. (This is my thought and has no factual information.)

Yeah, I agree with you on the promising and than not delivering.  Of course, not much we can do accept not buy the island, but I know that I am really excited about it and really want to play it.  (By the way, I was just messing with you when I said don't cry  ).

Mark, I'm curious since you mentioned that you are a developer.  What exactly do you develop?  Would be cool if it was video games

I'm a web developer for a health insurance company.  I develop mostly .NET stuff in c#.  And yes, it would be very cool if I developed video games.  Or even DVD profiling software.

I also think it's bad ju-ju for them to talk about the island being free, then going back on that.

I also think that pricing looks good.  I'm thinking the island shouldn't be more than around $15 since you can now get the full game for $30, but I wouldn't be shocked if it was closer to $20.  But my guess is $10-$15.  I think the other prices look dead on.

Sorry for restoring an old thread! But I just got Burnout Paradise a couple of days ago and have been enjoying it since then. Today I've just left my PS3 switched on to allow Burnout to download the s/w update (it says v1.50).

Does this include all the free update packs like motorbikes etc. OR do we need to download them separately?

With that update you should get all the previous updates rolled into one. Day/Night cycle, motor bikes, etc.

DVDsRGreat:  Did you download Burnout Paradise from the PSN Store?  I'm going to guess yes because you said it says v1.50 and from what I've been told that means it is the digital version.  If you are signed onto the PSN when you start the game it should tell you there is an update available.  You should already have the bikes, trophies and other free updates.  I wouldn't be surprised if they were included in the digital download already.  You should have two motorcycles at the end of your cars in the Junkyard.

I don't think this has been reported yet, so I'll put it here.

I'm guessing everyone knows the Party Pack (paid content) is being released next week.  But there's also a free update next week as well.  It will include:

An in-game browser.  Not sure what this is.  More details are supposed to be coming this week.

An in-game store.  This is where you'll be able to purchase the Party Pack as well as future pack and other merchandise.

They've tweaked the car handling for some of the earlier cars to make it easier for new player.  For example, the Hunter Calvary will now be slower and harder to crash.  More advanced cars later in the game are supposed to remain unchanged.  They've also tweaked event for these earlier cars to match their new stats.

They've changed stunts runs to make them easier for beginners.  At the beginning of a stunt run the time will run slower.  As you build up multipliers, the timer will go faster.  I believe it will ultimately get back to where it is today.  Not sure what happens if you hit x20, crash and still have time to begin another run.

Road Rage no longer will add time to the timer once you've hit your goal.  So if you need to take down 5 cars, when you've completed that, any additional takedowns don't add time to the clock.  This one seems stupid and pointless to me.  Who cares if someone want to keep going and get 200 takedowns?

Barrel rolls have been changed to make them easier for beginners.  Now your car will automatically right itself after a roll.  You can still push the stick into the roll if you want to go for doubles, triples, etc.  If you don't touch the stick, I guess you just get a single.  I hate this one since I'm not used to steering into the roll.  Guess I'll have to change my playing style!

They're added a restart option! So if you want to run that race you've just lost over again, you can now pick Restart instead of having to drive all the way back to the beginning.  If you've advanced to at least your D license, I think you'll appreciate this one.

Finally, they've made visual tweaks.  First things are little brighter.  This will help when driving at night.  They've also changed the graphics for billboards, fences and super jumps.  The goal is to make them easier to find.  They say the fun of getting a billboard is in figuring out how exactly to get to it.  Not spending 2 hours driving around downtown trying to find the last one you're missing.  As someone who has spent hours trying to track down that last whatever, I think this is a huge improvement.  Now I just wish there was a way to distinguish between super jumps you've found vs. those you haven't.  Maybe that will be there too.

You can read all about it on Criterion's site or watch the latest episode of Crash TV on iTunes.

Maybe I misunderstand you here, but the time that's slower now is that red circle that counts down between two eligible stunts, not the overall time. It's supposedly 16 seconds now at the beginning, then goes down to what we have now, which will be around x30. The available time for the stunt run is unchanged.

So, at around x20 the timer will be down near normal already. Did you mean you wonder, if you crash with regular time to spare and assuming the reset takes less than 10 seconds whether you can still pick up the multiplier...?

I believe you still get the same length of time to do the stunt run (2-3 minutes).  It's the timer that keeps your combo alive that counts down slower.  As you build your multiplier, it goes faster.  I'm not sure at what point it goes back to normal time (what we have today).  I'm also guessing that it doesn't continue to count down faster once you reach that point.

Really, if you read the article on their site or watch the podcast, you know everything I do.

The Party Pack and new patch are now available.  I'm kind of surprised that the Party Pack is $9.99.  I expected it to be cheaper.  Not a big deal since I probably won't be getting it, but it makes me wonder what the island will cost.

Also, they're announcing a new add-on tomorrow.  Rumors are that it's something police related.

So have you downloaded the update yet?  If so what do you think of the changes to the interface?  I'm not sure I'm crazy about the new setup for the Junkyard where you choose the cars or the bikes.  i haven't checked anything else out yet, though I'm not sure how noticeable some of the other changes will be.
