Finnish ratings should be corrected. Current ratings (S/T, K7, K11, K15 and K18) are not valid. The letter K does not belong to the rating information at all. Current classifications are:
3
7
11
13
15
18

See http://www.vet.fi/english/board.html.

Ken asked me to put this here in case somebody has any thoughts on the subject. Current ratings have been valid since 2001 (except 13, which was added beginning of this year, because 11 is too low age limit for Harry Potter movies and 15 is too high).

Most of the Finnish DVD's in Intervocative's database already used current ratings. For some reason S/T-rating was inherited from the pre-2001 classification.

Ken informed me that the ratings can be updated at any time, without need for a program release.

Just wondering, if these could be accumulative changes? Changing the ratings now to the present classification would make all the DVDs released up until 2001 have "wrong" ratings on them.

My take on this is that DVDs are a product of their time, and in my opinion then-current ratings should be part of the documentation in the profile in DVDP. The rating is not a feature inherent in the movie, it is just a stamp on the back of the product, and in that sense it should be preserved in the profile just as the overview.

But first things first. I agree that the rating classification in DVDP should be renewed. It would also be nice to have the "Rating"-dropdown-menu changed to set of ticks, where we would initially select the rating from the DVD cover, and in rare (old) cases where it is different to the current classification, we would also select the current rating class corresponding to (or best equivalent to) the one on the cover.

Also add Adult to the list, porn is K18 rated, as are many non porn movies. As opposed to the British system that has an 18 and R18(?) rating, to distinguish porn from the rest.

Also within the new system, isnt there anymore "all ages" movies?

You still get porn with the 18 rating, just not hard core. Unless of course it's artistically justifed as in films such as 9 Songs.

If it's artistically justified it's not porn...

Actually there are two "18" ratings in Finland too. When the movie is reviewed at the Finnish Board of Film Classification they might put rating 18 on it. Then the number is in a red circle. If the movie distributor decides not to have the film previewed by the board, then they must put symbol 18 in a red square. Those unclassified films still has to be reported to the board (if I've understood correctly).

What comes to the pre-2001 ratings, the Board has published rules how to treat those ratings under the new law. Old ratings 16 and 14 should be 15, 12 and 10 = 11; and 8 and 6 = 7. If the actual rating of the time of release does not match the current ratings, then it usually is visible in the back cover scan.

By the law rating 3 actually means "all ages".

I agree with Jykke that Finnish ratings needs to be updated.

But is the number of ratings still limited to 7 like in DVDP 2.x product???
If is then that new 13 rating is quite difficult to add.

Here is current ratings in DVDP 3.0 for USA compared to Finnish:

USA    =>    Finland
G      =>      S/T
PG    =>    K7
PG-13  =>  K11
R      =>    K15
NC-17  =>  K18
Adult  =>    Adult
NR      =>    NR

That S/T should be changed to 3. I have asked this many times in DVDP 2.x, maybe now.

Even we don't have NR rating in finland it's good to keep because e.g. some music dvds doesn't have finnish covers so they basically are not rated.

Adult rating doesn't exist is finland. Porn movies, soft or hard ones, are K18. Really soft ones are K15. So adult rating is not needed.

If it is possible add one more (total 8) rating between K11 and K15 then is great thing and should be done.
But if ratings are limited to 7, then I don't know what would be the best way to do this change.

Maybe we could do it like this:

Current  => NEW
S/T    =>      3
K7      =>      7
K11    =>      11
K15    =>      13
K18    =>      15
Adult  =>    18
NR    =>      NR

But this will cause lots of corrections to profiles and ratings isn't exactly matching e.g. USA ratings anymore.

At the end, if number of ratings is limited 7, my suggestion is that current S/T will be changed to 3 and current K11 is changed to 11/13 and remove 'K' from all others.

Ah, forgot about that. Probably cause i've only seen it used on imported movies. But that probably equals to the NR of the US system.

So the list should be more like:

USA    =>    Finland
G        =>    3
PG      =>    K7
PG-13  =>    K11
PG-13  =>    K13
R        =>    K15
NC-17  =>    K18
Adult  =>  Adult

NR      =>  3 - Tarkastamaton
NR      =>  K18 - Tarkastamaton

I think the K should stay, it is used always with written language, and it indicates it being "Kielletty alle", as kulju said the 3 is not.

It will always make trouble. A CSI episode was banned from Japan, cause it showed genital area on a dead body, which is illegal there. Also e.g. in Finland nudity isnt that big deal (violence is), while in US its the other way around. The child lock should go by locality. So K18 equals NC-17, which is the more strict parental control. Though to some extent K15 can show softcore porn

I prefer that the rating in DVDP match with the official rating symbols: 3, 7, 11, 13, 15 and 18.

Everybody (in Finland) knows eg. that "11" means "Kielletty alle 11-vuotiailta". For a person not speaking Finnish, letter K means nothing.

Well that would be all fine, but i still think we should also add the non-rated ratings there. You never know when you might stumble across one of them, so those should be added at the same time.

So, if more than 7 ratings are supported then it would be:
3, 7, 11, 13, 15, 18 and NR together with "Adult" if that is needed for parental control to work.

Any objections?

We need info from Invelos to total number of ratings before we can continue this.

Ken are ya reading this?

If there can be 8 ratings then 3 (G), 7 (PG), 11 (PG-13), 13 (PG-13), 15 (R), 18 (NC-17), Adult (Adult), NR (NR) is fine by me.

But if there can be only 7 .... would it be 11/13 (PG-13) or 13/15 (R) ???

After Ken's answer maybe we should make some kind of poll about this?
Or all three of us (is here more finnish people) just make decision.

No objections.

JaLe IF only 7 are allowed, then i would say drop the NR, actually i would say drop it anyway.

Using 18 instead of NR, on a non rated 18 movie is more accurate. If we cant get 18-NR and 3-NR then its not useful.
