I'm not trying to cause trouble. It's an honest question and one you are yet to answer. Who cares if it is a well known thing, that isn't the point. The point is you are now condoning people adding a UPC from the shrinkwrap and not from the actual case.

If the UPC on the shrinkwrap covered the UPC on the case at the time of retail purchase then it is the product's UPC.

OK cool. I'm going to change about 100 UPC's then because they had store stickers on the shrinkwrap with different UPC's to the actual case. I'll be sure to request they all get deleted.

Wait, now I'm confused.

Am I to take it that if I get a DVD with a UPC that is different on the shrinkwrap that is what is on the actual cover, I am to use the UPC that is on the shrinkwrap?

Because I've seen this happen often.

I understand the OP's dilemma, but using the UPC on the shrinkwrap is new, and the rules should be updated for clarity and situations such as this.

If the overview has a spelling error we are to leave it. What makes this case any different? The UPC that is on the case is the one that should be entered into the database.

Often the shrink wrap has a different UPC number covering the one on the DVD case - usually if it is on sale.

Excellent point.

With all due respect, Alien. I suspect you have just hit upon why the Rules don't get updated, even as often i would like. How many times do I see the same remark, the Rules need to be updated for this, that or some other issue, to the point that it boggles the mind.  I'll wager at the moment we probably have 50-100 such remarks regarding any users pet project which are outstanding at this time. The Rules aren't clear here so update it, over here we just ran into something new update the rules, whoops what about this crew guy...update the rules. Seems to be the latest Forum buzzwords...update the Rules., all this wile we call for Ken to intercede on every debate.

Um... yeah.

That doesn't even begin to answer the question I asked.

So skip argues for being reasonable where slavishly following the rules doesn't make sense now. I'm impressed and agree with him on this. This is a rare situation, but since it is verifiable what happened here (i.e. that the upc on the case is a misprint) and since we have no way to enter both movies under the same UPC and we know the correct UPC wwhile will presumable be used on subsequent printings, this is the way to go.

The media company knew they had made a mistake, that's why they put a sticker with the correct EAN for The Duchess on the outside of the shrink wrap: 7312230505945

Unfortunately you can't produce a matching scan if you have thrown the sticker away... (as I did). So if you contribute this, be sure to mention why the EAN doesn't match the cover in your notes.

I have this confimed (email) from the media company now, I will have to dig through my trash for the sticker

You shouldn't submit it. You need to submit with the disc-id because the UPC has been used already. Mistake or not, the UPC is on the actual packaging and using a sticker on shrinkwrap is absolutely absurd for what you are adding when there is a legitimate UPC on the case (distributors mistake or not).

Although it would be more convenient for these one-off mistake printings, I don't want to open the can of worms that would make stickered UPCs an official alternate entry ID.  In this case, if the printing is an error perhaps the distributor will correct it in subsequent runs.  In the mean time, disc ID is the suggested entry method.

If that is not ample confirmation I don't know what it would take. But nothing surprises me in this community...

But the distributor has corrected it. They are just too cheap to order a re-print.

Nothing makes it diffrent from all the other mistakes we correct from the cover, if they can be confirmed. It's just a matter of documenting the changes.

Often? I've never seen it on a Swedish DVD before. But I've seen it on US/Canadian covers that I've ordered online. Sometimes you'll find both these (with and without) stickers in the database.

IMO, if the sticker is stuck to the actual case (and NOT the shrinkwrap) and the sticker is a distributor sticker then yes, there is a solid argument (not that I agree with it) but even if that was allowed the old one still shouldn't be removed or changed as that was how it was originally released, even if it was done accidentally... instead, it would be a seperate profile (again, just my opinion).
