I am seeing a bit of this lately where people are taking the opportunity of a "Wider Contribution" to reorder Genres to their personal preference (just reordering not adding)

Genre Rules:
Quote:
Genres are often a matter of personal interpretation, which can differ among users. If your personal preference for Genre differs from the main database, you can store the information you prefer in your local database and lock the Genre field from further updates. Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect.

now it's the word "only" in the bolded sentence that is being used to justify reordering because if you are contributing changes to other fields then you are not "only" reordering the genres, I'm not sure this is how the rule was meant to be interrupted and just wanted to get clarification on this.

I believe this is obviously well within the rules, but then I don't have especially strong feelings about the order of genres.

Agreed.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

The problem is that the prime general is selectable as list column and that a lot of people feel that "Television" isn't a genre at all.

Especially with TV I only know two kinds of contributions: It's either the first or the last, never in between.

Me, personally orders TV and Animation at the end, to have the "real" genre (like Sci-Fi) at the beginning, but I've never contributed a re-ordering of genres to the Online DB.

I don't either; I personally use tags to denote television profiles.  I also don't often contribute genre information because too many people get heartburn over changes.

When it comes to TV series I personally always put Television first. Even if it is not a "Real" genre... it is for the purposes for DVD Profiler at this time... and it is first and foremost  a TV Series

I put them in alphabetically, but I never contribute unless I'm adding a new genre that I felt was missing.

No, ninehours, that is simplyyour opinion. it is one of the stuopidest Contributions I see, even when part of a wider Contribution. What purpose does it serve? Just to align the Onlinewith your opinion?

I on the other hand, since TV is not a Genre put TV in the last slot . I frankl;y don't get the logic of it in the first slot. So what?

I NEVER EVER re-oreder genre for any reason, if one has TV first fine, if it has TV last fine, the data is the SAME. As I said this is one of the absolutely most useless of Contributions. As long as the data, locally, is the way i want it...so what. I only annoys me when I see someone who wants to do this, even under cover of a wider contribution because it is so silly. It not only TV, I see it in other ways, and it is merely some user wanting the Online  to match his preference for setup.

I agree with this. If someone took the time to do a wide contribution, and re-order the genres, it doesn't bother me at all and I'll vote yes every time. I can just decline the genre change when I download it.

We have been around this BEFORE. Because Ken put it in there TEN YEARS ago.     Classic is there for the SAME reason and it's not a genre either. SHEESH
