Hello,

this time let us stay civil about the Stereo - Surround discussion.

I recently discovered the BD-Info Tool, which is a freeware tool that tells you everything about a Blu-Ray.
Here is a screenshot:

This is for the Pelham 123 Blu-ray, as that tool clearly states the commentary tracks are encoded Dolby Surround, I guess it is safe to go with that and update the Blu-Ray along with all other Blu-rays, for which the tool also states Surround tracks.

This tool displays for nearly all Stereo tracks that are right now unproven (just taken the info from the cover) in the database that the stereo tracks are actually surround tracks.

Before I do massive contribution updates I would like to hear opinions from you.

cheers
Donnie

I wasn't privy to the last discussion and I'm no audio expert, but the description of those tracks reads 2.0 - if they were proper surround shouldn't that read 2.1? Doesn't the 2.0 mean stereo?

Northbloke, it reads 2.0 with Dolby Surround flag, you can clearly see the "Dolby Surround" after the 2.0

It says:

2.0 / 48 kHz / 192 kbps / Dolby Surround

No North, Dolby 2.0 can be Mono, Stereo or Surround. The .1 designation would be for a subwoofer which is not applicable the Dolby Surround. That only applies in 4.0 (I think) and above.

Don't get me started on the whole Mono, Stereo, Surround again. It's ugly and i don't want to do it.

It also tells you the exact length of each track, the languages, Bit Rates and much more, it is a really nice tool.

Have you tried it on 2.0 mono and stereo tracks and what was the result?

It says Mono on Mono tracks, I tried that, for Stereo tracks, as I stated in the other heated discussion, they are almost non existing, so if you can tell me a Blu-ray which you think has a 2.0 Stereo track, let me know (of course I have to own that Blu-ray too)

cheers

Only from recent memory but I think the commentary on Pan's Labyrinth was DTS 2.0 stereo, or at least ambiguous. Actually, I just downloaded the program so I can test it myself...

I'd like to see that, too: is there any stereo track that it doesn't label "Surround"? If there are, even if there are just a few, then I'd trust the "Surround" label just that extra tad more...

I've downloaded the program and I'll try and test some of my own blu-rays for this when I've got the time.

I was actually just comparing my collection to yours to see which are currently marked as stereo & then checking them on my player. I'll let you know if I find any Stereo Blu-ray titles.

Okay, here's the result for Pan's Labyrinth. It just says 2.0, no surround.

Quote:
Codec                          Language        Bitrate        Description
-----                          --------        -------        -----------
DTS-HD Master Audio            Spanish        0 kbps          7.1 / 48 kHz / 24-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit)
Dolby Digital Audio            English        256 kbps        2.0 / 48 kHz / 256 kbps / DN -4dB

So at least the program sort of confirms my suspicision, from just using my ears.

Found one!

Band of Brothers (7321900233422)

I used disc 1, episode 1 and switched to the French & Spanish audio tracks and they were both reported as Stereo.

Edit: I've got no Blu-ray drive on the PC so I can't check myself.

Heyas,

also found a stereo one:

Elektra Blu-Ray

it displays NO Dolby Surround for the 2.0 track.

So I think it can be said, that this tool gets it correct

Any objections

So it seems. At least it's a whole lot better than just guessing and assuming.

I think it looks good so far. The only thing I'm slightly concerned about is the version number seems to suggest it's still a beta. As such, if there's a conflict between what the software says & what people's hardware says, which do we believe?

Also, Bridge to Terabithia (786936733624) reports both commentary tracks as Stereo.
