| | Posted: | | | | I've recently acquired several DVDs featuring classical music concerts in HD and 7.1 surround sound. The formats for Dolby Surround in my version of Profiler only go as high as 5.1 surround. Is it possible to add 7.1 to the format menu. If not should I just leave it at 5.1 when making contributions? |

The current release, version 3.71, does 7.1 for specific audio formats (Dolby TrueHD, the DTS HD) but not the basic formats (Dolby Digital, DTS).
I don't know that the basic formats have ever had more than 5.1 channels (one of the audio experts may chime in differently).
If your receiver doesn't provide details on exactly what format was encoded then hopefully the packaging will provide the details. Most mainstream films have that info on the cover. Hopefully that will help you pick the exact format. | | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

| | Posted: | | | | Useful and helpful info from all here - thanks. My version is 3.7.1 Back cover of case states 7.1 surround. Digging around a bit more in this version I found that only the PCM format gives the 7.1 option. None of the others, ie Dolkby Digital, DTS, Dolby Dig Ex, DTS ES, MPEG-2 do. Interestingly the Audio Options offered on the actual DVD are (1) Dolby/Dig 5.1 and (2) Dolby/2.0. Bear with me folks, I'm no tech head! |

A DVD-Video disc can have up to 8 audio tracks (streams) associated with each video track (or each video angle). Each audio track can be in one of three formats:
Dolby Digital (AC-3): 1 to 5.1 channels
MPEG-2 audio: 1 to 5.1 or 7.1 channels
PCM: 1 to 8 channels. I wasn't aware of that and would have chimed in with my fellow collectors that 6.1 (matrixed for DD, discrete for dts) was top of the line. The lack of knowledge most likely stems from a lack of need to know, as PCM was always quite a niche-format, almost(!) always used only for music, which was only 2 channels anyways. Of my 765 DVD-titles only 12 have PCM at all, 10 being said music dvd's one geman tv-program and one german movie both from before 2000. Back to the case at hand: if the DVD has a BD-sister it would still be possible that the 7.1 is only on the BD and the layout-department botched up the covers. | | Posted: | | | | Technically, PCM can have 8 channels, but since the maximum audio bitrate is 1.5 mbps on DVDs, you can really only do 2. |
