Yes, "Story by" usually means that they came up with a story but didn't write a script, so I also use "Original Material By".

I have to agree with Rifter here on Story by being the same as Written by.

The notes section in the Rules says that Original Material is adapted from another medium. The help text in DVDP itself says "Book, poem, song, etc". I always thought that it means something published material. Eg. in case of Lord of the Rings "Original Material By" suits perfectly to J.R.R. Tolkien. But in case of a television series episode: what is the original material? In a television series episode "Story by" simply means that one person wrote the plot and another person wrote the teleplay based on the plot. Sometimes there is only Written by credit in the episode. That time the credited person wrote everything for the episode.

Whenever I have seen "Story By" and there is no evidence of original material available somewhere else, I have used Written By credit in DVDP.

Could you explain this. You are the first one to make this imterpretation, which is different to everybody else's approach.

Because a writer is a story teller, and movies are made from written scripts, screenplays, novels, etc.

...but for DVD Profiler purposes only "Writer" or "Written by" in the credits should qualify for a "Writer" credit in Profiler (as per the rules). "Story by" is in 99% of cases accompanied by a "Screenplay/Teleplay by" credit, so "Story by" should be credited as "Original Material by", as the said Story is the Original Material on which the Screenplay/Teleplay is based. This has been discussed plenty of times in the forums, and I believe "Story by" = "Original Material by" has been the clear consensus.

Totally correct!

Story By = Original Material By
Writer or Written By = Writer

Check the Rules.

Yes and that is why we use Original Material by for Writers, the Written by credit is for original screenplays only.

On music, Theme By and Score By equal Composer, and Lyrics By equals Songwriter.

According to the rules for DVD Profiler purposes Composer is for "Used for the composer of the film's Original Score".  Where as Song Writer is "Original Songs, written specifically for the film".

Wasn't there a discussion about Characters by covering Created By a few months ago?  I can't in my dotage remember if it was here or at the old site....

It was here but, the problem is Original Material by and Original Characters by doesn't always fit.  And since it wasn't covered by the rules most everyone agreed it was best to wait and see if Ken gives us Created by credit.

Here is the last discussion on Created by

Tracy:

Actually so far (Based on my own experience), Created by does seem to fit. There is another credit that is used that Iwould call problematic, Developed by, this seems to be used frequently when a TV series is taken from the silver screen. But I WOULD like to see a separate Created by credit and perhaps a Developed by as well.

Well, you don't have to take it from me if you don't want to, even if I do work in this horrendous industry.

That is quite correct. In the 'Created By' credit, the initial writers 'create' (excuse the redundancy) the characters, attitudes, tone of the show, the different schemes or first plots they will get entangled with, etc, all from an original idea/outline. In the 'Developed By' credit, the first writers will do exactly the same thing, except that they will do so from previous existing material, be the silver screen, a novel, another show... you get the idea.

Original Material by ... In theory possibly but, still would rather see a real created by credit. Considering the created by credit is usually the same for every single episode of a given series.  However you could have episodes that my have various writing credits including original material by.  Since "Story by" with "Teleplay by" is quite common in TV series.  Personally I wouldn't mind seeing a "Story by" writing option as well as the "Created by" option.

Problem I've seen with original characters by is there are some shows that actually have a "Characters Created by" credit as well as a Created by credit.  The only time I've seen developed by is in some older TV series where there wasn't a Created by used.  But, hey you know how Hollywood is creating credits confusion.

Why don't we ask Ken to replace all these by a single generic credit called " Whatever By"

Yup. It all depends on how the writers want to be credited and how the Writers Guild of America will allow them.

Let's say you want to make a sitcom based on the novel 'Misery' (wouldn't that be a riot? ). So, you will probably get this:

  • Characters Created by Stephen King, since you are basing you whole show unto characters he created for the book.

  • Created by Tracer and his amusing Dog In Tights. (Or Developed By, this depends on the WGA's current rules and how good you agent is  )

  • As it stands now on DVDProfiler, this means a lot of people would get their credit on Original Material By. You would, Stephen King would and also the different writers who create plots or outlines for several episodes BUT NOT the actual scriptwriter.

So, I would agree. It would be cool to have options for 'Created By', 'Developed By' and perhaps, 'Original Characters By' if it applies.
