Look at it this way: If you had an HD DVD player, then you'd have to start buying those, PLUS you'd have to keep buying regular DVDs to keep up with new issues. And if Bluray should win, the gods forbid... !?  | | | John

Edit: Can this be combined with this offer? I've been following this real close all week on several different forums. I've not seen anything that would leave me to believe that deal is off. I've taken Tuesday off, so I'll get the A2 for $299, The Matrix Collection for $80, plus two free HD DVDs on the spot, plus the 5 from the mail in offer. I'm dying to get the Matrix and don't really care about the other two. Then I did the math. I pretty much have to pick up a couple movies anyway just so I can try the new player out. I'd get at least 2. So that's $50 (I think HD DVDs are about $25 at Best Buy). That brings the Matrix set down to $30. Thanks in advance It's been posted around various web sites. Circuit City is supposed to have the exact same deal running. That's all I know. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a false rumor. But the guy who posted the advanced ads has been doing so for years and although I usally don't follow them that closely, I've never heard of him getting his facts wrong. Hopefully he's not wrong this time. Even if it does turn out to be false, I got my HDMI cable in the mail today and have already scheduled Tuesday off. I don't see how a upconverted DVD can ever look as good as a well made HD disc. I have to say I'm addicted.  Only occasionally I'm still buying DVDs but the vast majority is HD DVD now. Concerning Blu ray: besides the prices for players I don't like the region coding at all. The only option for Blu ray to enter my home would be a reasonable priced combo player. That was too much for me and I just got back with a brand new HD DVD player! I also picked up King Kong (since it's supposed to be one of the prettiest HD DVDs out), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (had to get something the whole family could enjoy) and Batman Begins. I already had Batman Begins on DVD, but I wanted something I could do A/B comparisons with. All told I spent under $330 for a player, three movies and an HDMI cable (which was unneccessary since the CostCo player comes with one). | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here.

| | Posted: | | | | The HD DVD player is awsome. I have it hooked up to a 1080p set and it's a sight to behold. Unfortunately, my sound system is a piece of crap. It was about the cheapest HTIB system I could get 5 years ago. Obviously there's no HDMI input, so I have to use an optical cable. But since the receiver doesn't have DTS decoders, I'm stuck with 2.0 sound for now.  Now I have to go pick up a new receiver. I'd been meaning to at some point anyway, but I had hoped to limp by with my old crappy system for a while yet. Still, it was worth every penny for the HD DVD player. Forgive me for not reading all the great posts here, but I'll toss my two-cents into the ring.
1. Eventually format wars will end, already we have, expensive, cross over machines doing either format.
2 Single format machine elminates a large segment of the hig def. population.
3. 1080p 1080i can you really tell the dif? Upconverting players will get our non-high def discs to 1080i.
4. My first vcr cost >$800 now <$100. Same concept holds for DVD players, I will wait for the cheap high def. machine.

Rico Just because its upconverted, it does not mean it adds any sort of quality. Honestly, there is a huge difference between a upconverted DVD (in my Oppo) vs the same movie in Bluray on my 1080p tv. Sure upconversion and an HDTV will make your DVDs look better, but getting a true 1080p source will blow you away. What I do is get the Bluray if it has the same extras as the DVD, and if not, I get the DVD for now and BR later. (I already bought several BR movies and replaced the Dvd movie in collectors cases - Kingdom of Heaven being one them). That way I get both the high quality movie and the extras I want. Sure it costs more, but DVDs are cheap on sales, and with coupons and all the BRs can also be found cheaply. |

True! The up converted movies look very good, better than the 480p IMHO. BR players are still expensive & cut in half the titles in HD. I guess you could get a Playstation III to reduce the cost, but you still get half the HD content. Format wars suck! A decent work around till the dust settles is up converting.
Wow! What a shame some of your BR's don't have the extras. That kinda blows watch a movie in BR then if you want to see the extras, change discs. I hope this changes for those who enjoy the extras.
How about music, got allot of bucks tied up in that?
33 1/3 albums > reel to reel tape > tape cassette > cd's > 0.99 > iPod. Quality & longevity increase, what a cost though. This has caused a backlash with consumers & helped foster P2P etc. I almost forgot a few music titles I still have in 8 track.

| | Posted: | | | | Besides my DVDs, I also play lots of video games. Thanks to both MS and Sony, I'm able to enjoy all formats.
I already had a Xbox 360, so spending $200 for the HD-DVD player was an easy choice for me, plus it came with King Kong.
I was getting a PS3 anyway, so that took care of Blu-Ray for me as well. As an aside, I've only watched Blu-Ray and DVDs on it. Three months in and I have not played one game.
Now I'll generally buy the HD version (one of the two formats) instead of the DVD, the hard part is when a movie is on both, which do I get. I think I'll end up on BR, but I like HD-DVDs combo format. Especially for family friendly movies. I bought Superman Returns on HD-DVD for that very reason. No need to double dip just to have a DVD copy on hand should I want to play it on another TV, or in the car.

I have a HD ready TV that I bought back in 2001 with the assurance that there would be a converter box to convert signals..unfortunately for me HDMI was adopted and my TV doesn't support HDMI and no converters as it interferes with the copyright aspects.. But I love the TV it's beautiful picture, still a projection TV that in the 6 years that I've had it I've had to do Zero work on it..no new bulbs, no nothing and it has a beautiful picture.... That said the main reason I'm not converting is I don't want to wind up on the Beta side of things so I'm waiting to see which format comes to the forefront or if a new technology makes it all mute... | | | | Bigger is not better..oh wait, yes it is... |
