It also would be a good idea to include in the rules what sites not to use info from.

IMO it's not about what site may or may not be used. It's about how they may be used. IMO it's ok to use any site for reference. But do not copy data and do not believe that any referenced source can be 100% accurate. And most data has to come from the DVD or cover directly by the rules anyway.

I agree. The more I read the forum commentary, the more confused I get!

If Invelos is going to ban the entire use of "3rd Party Sites/sources" then I see a future where there will be fewer and fewer contributions.

...

Invelos has always banned copying from third party sources (and IVS did two years back).

If you find an "Official Site" for a film or TV show, it is not a "third party source", it would be "second party" and the DVD is "first party".

It is just not that much work on most films to enter the cast and crew data by hand from the film credits. I have my PC setup with dual screens to make it easy, DVDProfiler on the main screen and PowerDVD running on the other. For release date and SRP I start at DVDPriceSearch.com and then use the links to check two or three other sites. For most films I can enter a full profile with cover scans in just under an hour. The really hard ones are films where the credits use a font so small that they all fuzz into a blob.

Agreed I'm not sure what all the fuss is about the rules have stated to take the cast and crew from the credits.  Sure it might be a little more difficult to come up with the role names when none are associated.  But, don't think it is impossible and if the contributor can not come up with a role when none is provided in the credits then just leave it blank and let another contributor come up with the role at a later contribution.

What about release dates for upcoming DVDs, SRP, uncredited cast/crew, artwork for upcoming DVDs and other such info?

What about it? Find the information, document it and everythings peachy.

Some people confuse "data" with "database".

You are for exampel not allowed to copy a complete article from CNN regarding the G8-summit, but you are of course, based on everything you read/hear, allowed to write your own article about it.

Similar: Just because "Releasedate: 01.01.2000" is somewhere mentioned the data isn't by magic THEIR data and it is all of a sudden not allowed to be uttered by anyone else. Simply find another source, name them both and everything ist fine. And yes, the border is a very fine line here, so get as much data as you can from the official websites, as soon as they are up.

Contributions, especially those adding cast and crew, must include the source of the data in the contribution notes.  We will be taking a harder line on this requirement going forward, so please include the source when you contribute.

That was in response to what hal9g posted on page 6 when he posted:

"BTW, we are not just talking about cast roles.  No data is to be taken from third party data sources.

I'm not sure where we're going to get release dates and SRP's from.

Just to be clear, I am an avid supporter of taking any data available from the DVD, from the DVD.

Problem is, all data is not available from the DVD, and we are getting so restrictive about where that data can be sourced, that many people will just stop contributing."

I was sort of agreeing with what he suggested.

For those of you thinking of doing it; I wouldn't use IMDB or Wikipedia as a source and expect to get any "yes" votes. Still, even if you do get some "yes" votes, don't expect to have the contribution approved.

If you're looking for role names for actors, one of the best places is TCMDB.com.  Turner Classic Movies is not affiliated with IMDB, and I have found their stuff to be dead on accurate - so far.  Plus, Turner Broadcasting owns a huge chunk of the older films in existence, so they are often the only source for many of these older movies.  Whenever possible, however, the best way to get the role name is to watch the movie/episodes in question and pick up the names that way.  Use the database as a backup.

And how is TCMDB not a third party database?

Actually, its not.  Most of the movies in their database, they own.  Therefore, its first hand information.

What he says !!!!

The requirement for naming the source is not designed to allow Invelos plausible deniability.  If the submitted data came from the IMDB or another source, we need to know that so we may properly decline the submission.  Falsely stating the source of data in an attempt to bypass this will result in an immediate and permanent ban from contributing.

It doesn't get any clearer than that.

Turner Broadcasting owns the largest film library on the planet.  If you think otherwise, prove it.

You get to make an unsubstantiated claim and I have to prove you wrong? OK. I'll play.

Estimate of 4,400 film titles in Warner catalog.
Estimate of 4,000 film titles in MGM catalog.
Estimate of Turner catalog at 2,800 titles.
1995 interview with Turner then-President in which he estimated the catalog size to be 3,800 titles.

On the main page of the TCM database, they advertise 150,000 titles in the database; therefore, "most" of their entries are not from their owned catalog.

According to this menu, TCM gets its key info from the AFI:

Also, users can contribute to their database. Here's the "About" page.
Here's the contribution form:

Note that one has to include a source.
