We've currently included names that were posted during the time that we were just posting the names here without including the documentation.

We'll remove them in a couple of days if the users who listed them here have not posted their documentation in this thread for inclusion in the database.

Great Stuff.

I hope Ken sanctions the use of the database as a reference for common names. It seems like the best way to ensure that people across all localities use the same name.

There's a discussion in the rule comitee forum to establish the default parsing of names. This combined with your database for names that do not fit the 'default' rule could be the answer we need.

It has been designed so it does not need to be listed as a reference in itself, but provides the forum code linking the sources/notes etc. that you can just copy and paste into your contribution notes.

Agreed. I see no reason why parsings cannot be included into the database, even if there is no "credited as" names to go with them. The BFI, one of the standard sources on the site also helps greatly with the parsing by showing the surname in all capitals. It is also not user built so can been seen as more reliable than other sources are perceived to be by some.

I'm only adding names that have already been approved. I hope other people are doing the same!

I add them when I contribute them. My reasoning for listing them at the point of contribution is so that we won't have variants pending for 2 days simultaneously where possibly they both get accepted. So far, no declines.

This list just tells you what names have been justified by others in a contribution. You still have to document it if you submit it in a contribution on your own. This just serves as a reference so that we can coordinate our choices. You are also free to choose a different name if you disagree.

From what you said there, I'd think it would very much make sense if the documentation was shown here as well

I'll second that.

Steve

I'm worried about the list being too long and hard to read if all of the documentation is in there as well.  Maybe we can come up with a hyperlinked version.

Right there you've hit on one of the major problems with this 'list' thing.  Aside from the fact that its all built on personal preference backed up by whatever documentation the user thinks wll work, its all spec.

This issue will NEVER be resolved as long as anybody can enter anything based on personal preference, even if you think it isn't personal.

What will work is an automated system based on how many entries for a name OR, a simple association list where A = B, C, D, E, F, G  etc.

We deal with what Invelos has given us and directed us to use. We don't have an automated system. We don't have a simple association list.

This is a good idea.  Nice to see these DVDP spin-off sites.  This makes four that I'm aware of.  This, Virtual Covers, and two PHP collection codebases.

One thing that is needed: support for "Other" sites.  As is, the information can only come from the specified sites and no where else.

Hi James/Andy - could you add Deborah Harry (aka Debbie Harry) to the database please. Her official website is www.deborahharry.com, and there was also a poll on here somewhere but I can't find it now!
Do you think it's also a good idea to copy the guidelines to the database so people can read them there too?
I noticed also there was overwhelming support for Chloë Sevigny as opposed to Chloe - I don't think it's worth adding to the database (unless you think it's worth it), but it does confirm guideline no. 3

Edit: found the Deborah Harry poll

I'm not sure how the database works, but I'd hope that any site can be listed in the green notes section and that the icons only represent the most common ones. If not, then I agree, we should be able to list any site, not just those ones.

The database will allow any site to be added, including notes as to why that site is relevant.

If you look at the S page, you will see an example of Steven Soderbergh where three additional links are included.

The icons as Northbloke says are just the most common easiest used. If additional sites are found to be used regularly then I will happily add them to the standards.

Tim//deZarn = Tim//DeZarn, Tim//De Zarn

I checked the discs (not the contributions!) in my collection and found the following credits for him:

TIM DEZARN: Nur noch 60 Sekunden,
Tim deZarn: Fight Club, Eine Nacht bei McCools, Six Feet Under, Das Glücksprinzip
TIM deZARN: Spider Man

Most of the entries in DVDP follow the IMDB style „Tim De Zarn“.
Browsing the internet I was not able to find an official page for him, but most of the sites mentioning him do this either with the IMDB name (which is not used in any credit on my DVDs) or as „Tim deZarn“

Conclusion: I proposed to use "Tim deZarn" as his common name and the contribution for "Eine Nacht bei McCools - R2german" was accepted.

I'll change the other occurences in my collection theese days.

Regards, AA

Thanks for the sugestion AA.

Please can you provide links to document your suggestion - we need documentation for all so that others can use the name without having to look up the documentation independently. We can't add it until we have that.

I appreciate that there are some names currently in the database without the documentation links - as James said in an earlier post, these came from this thread before it was need, and will be removed if the documentation is not provided shortly.
