(...) whose name is capitalized as MANFREDI ALIQUO' in the HBO series "Rome". Should he then be credited as Manfredi Aliquò or as Manfredi Aliquo'? Neither way is completely correct, but using the apostrophe is the way that most closely resembles what's on the screen, IMO.

Manfredi Aliquò is the only correct solution. "O`" in Italian is always converted to the lower case "ò". "o`" does not exist in the Italian language.

Hm. How would you credit the second of these 3 names then, seeing as how it's not written in capital letters:

The link did not work for me...I got a picture of two ladies, not a screen cap of end credits.

Credit as Doro Corrá

We should always use local grammar/alphabet customs when working with actors. To do otherwise is non-sensical.

The concensus appears to be that using a common profile for cast and crew would be a major improvement than the current situation. Why are we hung up about francois etc, surely this will be the 1% of problems encountered in the exercise, whilst 99% will be perfect.

Lets keep this all in perspective - green light from me for what it's worth

"Doro Corrà".

http://www.cinematografo.it/bancadati/consultazione/biografia.jsp?id_anagrafica=876

That mark there is an accent, not an apostrophe, though they graphically can be the same.

Something like that can happen with the letter "I", which sometimes is graphically identical to an "l", still a different letter.

Actually it would be "Corrà". The "á" is not used in Italian.

I've just created a new topic to discuss this idea. I thought it needed it's own room for discussion rather than getting tagged on here.

To be honest I think a lot of these problems would be overcome in the long run if instead of having a local cast & crew database we had a central database that contained all the names. That way we are more likely to find regional variations and similar names when making profiles.
To take an example from a recent topic: if we only have William Morgan Shepherd in our local database, how are we to know that W Morgan Shepherd is the common name. But if there was a central database and we searched for the name, both would appear and we'd at least have an idea that maybe "credited as" is the way to go.

I am going to get slapped but, according to the rules, it is Doro Corra'.  The name is supposed to be copied exactly, unless it is in all caps.  This is not in all caps.

I agree. To quote Wikipedia's article on the grave accent ` again http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_accent:

Quote:
Especially with capital letters, or when using a keyboard without accented letters, an apostrophe is sometimes used instead of it in Italian, thus E’ instead of È "[he/she/it] is", though this is considered (at least) inelegant and inaccurate.

Note that is says especially with capital letters, not exclusively. It also says that it is considered inelegant and also maybe inaccurate to use the apostrophe instead of the grave accent - but obviously it is being done, as in the screencap I posted.

Even though an on screen credit is spelled incorrectly (or if there is an incorrect use of an apostrophe instead of a grave accent), that doesn't mean we are supposed to correct it based on grammatical rules. We are supposed to go with AS CREDITED, and then use the Common Name/Credited As system for situations like this, IMO.

True, we sometimes use whatever tick mark we can  to show that the preceding letter is an accented letter.
If your keyboard lacks the "à", you could write "a'" (apostrophe/single quote) or "a`" (grave accent mark) or even "a’" (right single quotation mark), but it's however intended as an accent mark. I think they are just different graphical representations to show the same accented letter, thus the letter at the end of "Doro Corra'" or "Doro Corra`" or "Doro Corra’"  would be an "à" all the time, unless you really want to transcribe the exact mark shown on screen, but that's not always an apostrophe!
For instance, that text in Wikipedia ("thus E’ instead of È") actually uses (right single quotation mark, Unicode U+2019), even if they call it an "apostrophe".

There will be a DVDVProfiler that WLIL be the most accurate databaseof its kind in the world, but it will not be Online, that courtesy of a bunch of idiots is an impossible dream, it will be right here in MY COMPUTER. Good bye and GOOD RIDDANCE.

I am sorry I wasted so much time trying help the single most ungrateful bunch of people it has ever been my displeasure to know.

And he wonders why people give him negative votes...

Much as I appreciate the work skip has put into this and do not want him to stop contributing to the database, I will not be sorry to see is bitter, bile-filled (#Parenthetical removed in the interests of good taste#) forum posts disappear.
