Hi all,

This is my first post here, but after reading several of the posts by others, it appears to me that many of you have larger collections then I do and I was just curious how you store them?

I currently have a bookcase that has my movies stacked two deep and two high in each shelf.  With kids in the house, it's tough to keep them organized and it's really difficult to find a movie to watch.

I'm thinking about getting something new for storage and would like some input from others.  Please provide links to sites if you have them.

I used a walk in closet of sorts. Was small, but I had to get some slidding door wardrobes fitted for our the missus!

I went to a local DIY place (B&Q uk) and they cut some wood in strips to the same length as a dvd and odered some brakets. Fitted them to the walls. Pretty easy and pretty cheap. I bought a large sheet of wood, I think only £18 ($35) and the brackets were only 49p ($1) each. The board did approx, 500 DVD's.

I'm having to go back and get some more soon, as the collection is on the floor now!

Its cheapper than looking at website with pre-built shelving. I did that and would have cost me a small fortune!

I did something quite similar but using the (slightly more expensive) metal uprights/movable brackets system... though also from B&Q!

My wife was worried that as I was doing it floor to ceiling it would be very 'intrusive' but because of the wall mounting and shallow 'DVD only' depth they are a lot less so than the couple of bookcases we had before - though it may not look like it from the pictures!

Each rack holds about 600+ DVDs (that being a mix of box sets and regular keep cases):

FWIW if you are going to use something like this method, DJ cases that are desinged for CDs are a massively cheaper and more efficient version of the same thing.

The way I look at it. You spend years amassing a huge collection that has cost you a small fortune, you wanna show it off and not hide it! Ive only managed to do the shelving for around half my collection and it looks pretty impressive!

Can't wait to get all them shelved and on display. 

A couple of people I know are going to storing their movies on hard disc.  I've wondering if this actually makes sense or if they're just doing it "because they can."

On the pro side, you can get storage at rates like 1TB for about $300.  This compacts movies down nicely, and you use your computer as a "media server."

On the other hand, hard drives crash....
