In my personal opinion, this thread has exceeded its usefulness.  YMMV

The problem that #3 people will never get is that if everyone is held to their standards, this program would grind to a halt.  Most of the users would stick to their local databases and only a handful of popular titles would get updated.  Even more confusing is that a lot of the #3 people don't even contribute on a regular basis, so they are asking people to conform to a standard that they are not willing to share with the rest of the users.

As are rules now, contribution means twice the job. For my last 50 contributions, which I made only because there was nothing in the online, I had to make the profile per the rules, contribute, then make an acceptable profile for my standards.  And of course, no changes are conceivable with the extra work that would be necessary.

In fact Invelos should promote first contributions. They are interesting for all users #1, #2, #3, and add really value to the program when they are correctly done. If italics in overview are missed or 20th Century Fox replaces the required Twentieth Century Fox will not damage too much the database, and hundreds of users will be pleased with that.  With this base, though not "perfect per the rules", everyone can edit his own profile for his local and enjoy the program

Rules were made by people obsessed by pingponging, a phenomenon that was far to rage everywhere. Their precision replaced ping ponging by nit picking, and dissuaded many people from contributing. Invelos should think about that...

Used to be 3....

Now more of a 2 teetering to 1.

I think that recent changes to the program have made being a 3 very hard.

In an ideal world (of my choosing!!!    ) I would revert back to profiles being 100% AS CREDITED for the purposes of the online db.

Then make Credited As a totally local thing. That would then result in no more endless discussions on common name, no more CLT is inaccurate discussions.

Make the online the true 'starting point'. The canvas that the rest of us can work from.

I want the db to be accurate - but wherever possible I do NOT vote based on my interpretation of the rules. If there is an element of doubt I always vote neutral.
There have been too many examples of users voting NO to changes only to discover that they were totally wrong later.

My test results:

Green 14
Gold 9
Blue 8
Orange 5.

Thinking about it, the atmosphere on these forums has not so much stopped me contributing, but it HAS caused a shift in the types of profile I contribute. I now tend to focus more on new contributions (especially less popular ones) and/or exotic releases, and often avoid contributing to mainstream releases.

Yes, that's exactly what I wanted to say, "as credited on disc". (Tried to write that yesterday but didn't succeed.)  Life was so much simpler then, if I remember well (but not sure) there were not so much problems as nowadays.

For the record I fall in the gray area between group 1 and group 2.

I hate when I put a UPC in and the profile isn't there. I usually add it to my collection using just the UPC and the title and refresh it in a week or two to see if something is there. If not I grab the cast list from another profile (or somewhere else on the web) and a quick google search will usually find a cover (although I have scanned a few) and I'm done. I use the program to track my DVDs and my buying habits. There are other sites I visit if I want to see specific details about the movie itself.

I have and will continue to submit many minor changes but have only done a handful of complete audits. Freeloader? Perhaps, but it's not "fun" for me to audit profiles and frankly I don't  have the time. I hardly even get the time to watch my movies let alone sit for hours profiling.

I'm so very glad there are those of you who enjoy it and I know without you the database would be a fraction of what it is. But even if you all decided to stop it really wouldn't change for many of us. The details can be found out there easy enough and for some (I'm guessing a lot of us) "close enough" is good enough.

I agree 100% and have said so. The linking is primarily a local issue, one in which we can SHARE data, and IF it were based on Simple Association instead of some bizarre system which is dependent on user input it would function even better locally. We coukld create and share the name links but the actual processing of the data would be purely local. For example let's try a hypothetical.

Instead of Robin Wright Penn=Robin Wright AND Robin Penn

The system would record Robin Wright Penn=Robin Wright=Robin Penn, there is NO priority name.

So let's say in a given collection a user has Robin Wright Penn (5), Robin Wright (2) and Robin Penn (1), since the link has been established no matter which of the three names the user searched on he would get the same list of 8 films. He could have the ability to prioritize his list, say he searched on Robin Penn, that would be the first title listed, he could then prioritize based on the count of the other variants in either ascending or descending form. This eliminates the CLT and the establishment of a Common Name based on the faulty model of user input and allows users to share the data for the linking at which point the linking becomes specific to HIS/Her collection instead of based on the Online collection.

I might have Robin Wright (6), Robin Wright Penn (4) and Robin Penn (2). It is irrelevant to me how many RWs, RWPs or RPs are in the Online, what I want the linking to do is tell me what I have in MY collection. Now if Ken were to incorporate a name search in the Online then it MIGHT be interestin to see be able to see overall results, for films I may have overlooked in my collection and wish to add, but that is a different function from the current CLT results.

Merged together, apparently I'm this sickly color.

Not too far off from you, deejay.

And, more on topic, simple linking does not solve the problem where "Tom Smith" can really mean one of several actors.  Although it does allow linking of disparate credited names as the current system allows, it would also result in links where none should exist.

However, reverting to a simple "as credited" for the online database, and allowing the linking to be local is something we are considering.  At the moment, I would lean towards the current system, which allows one user to contribute links for others to benefit from, a philosophy which after all is the heart and soul of DVD Profiler.

One more quick note - Gerri is currently working on a rule update, incorporating some of the recent discussions and hopefully clarifying some areas.  When ready, a preview will be posted in the contribution rules forum.

After all of the effort some of us have put into this, I'm stunned that you could throw it all away.
