So I got my parents a TV for Christmas. They're still using a 27" JVC tube that's probably 12 years old or so and has a few buttons broken off. I've already given them a cheap Blu-ray player and my old Kenwood HTiB. They're out of town right now, so I completely switched around all the inputs on their receiver. I actually had to do this in order to accomodate the new TV in a sensible fashion as some things now run to the receiver will go directly to the TV and I needed to put the TV's digital audio out somewhere. They don't actually get the TV for a few days yet because they're waiting until everyone off work to do presents. Having to relearn how to use the audio is sure to piss them off, making it all the better on Tuesday when they wake up to a new TV. (I just have to install it quietly so as not to wake them up. The hard part is removing the old TV, which weighs more than 60 pounds and has no handle.

Good luck, Ace! Sounds like a very nice surprise!
Perhaps you could make them a one-page manual on how to operate their audio now.

don't forget to leave a very extensive setup guide for them.. ( especially the audio end of it).,, if they are like a lot of elderly parents .. They don't need or want anything complicated .. Just off and on and one touch button for viewing ..

They haven't called to complain yet. I'm disappointed.

haha...60 pounds. That's a featherweight! Before I upgraded to my 61" Samsung I have now, I had a 36" Sony tube TV. That sucker weighed 238 lbs!! My ex-wife was whining about wanting the Sony, so I set it out in the driveway and watched with enjoyment as she and some friends tried to load that massive beast! LOL

I have a 160 pound 32-inch tube TV. It doesn't work well, but I can't move it to dispose of it.

I have the same problem with my McIntosh amplifier, not that I want to get rid of it. But if I ever want to move it I think I'll need help.

I never said how this turned out. I was able to install the TV quietly in the middle of the night, surprising my parents when they got up. I was not able to remove the old TV effectively as I could very well carry it anywhere in the dark, so I left it blocking my dad's chair. Apparently, my dad had spent most of Sunday complainign abotu me changing the inputs around on their TV and receiver.
