Not only for Greek names. Those common names threads just propagate wrong data.

Exactly, I used the same argument supporting you in the Francois/François debate some hours/days ago...

I disagree. These threads show how much wrong data (mostly from imdb) was contributed. And I'm really shocked each time that there are not only a few imdb-copied profiles in the database...

And these threads don't propagate wrong data. You are after the "real name", but it looks like Ken means with "common name" not the "real name", but the "most credited form".

Exactly.

The lookup tool is not to be blindly trusted, however it does outweigh other sources, including autographs.  The common name is not intended to always reflect the "real name", but the most commonly credited name.

However, if a user documents errors in the database where the credit is not entered properly, that can and should be considered.  Better yet, correct the entries, assuming you own the discs in question, thereby correcting the lookup results.

Out of this thread. bolded by me.

What you do not understand is that :
ANDRE MARANNE = André Maranne
ANDREAS VOUTSINAS = Andréas Voutsinas
FRANCOIS TRUFFAUT = François Truffaut.

This is not IMDb, this is exact "most credited form", and not invented "most credited form"

ANDRE MARANNE = Andre Maranne
ANDREAS VOUTSINAS = Andreas Voutsinas
FRANCOIS TRUFFAUt = Francois Truffaut
are just invented data to please a few dozen of people who prefer to interpret rules at the letter. I know that for them, if they understood that rules ask us to enter K as Q, we would have Nicole Qidman as common name (no difference between Andre and Qidman : exactly the same horror...).

OK for those who want to play this game, but I would prefer some common sense here.

Sorry, but ANDRE MARANNE could mean "Andre Maranne" OR "André Maranne". We'll never know which was meant by the people who made the credit rolls.
So instead of guessing (logic or not) we'll take what is actually shown. Otherwise the rules would get even more complicated (and IMHO they are already not very easy, especially crew section).

Not at all. This is IMPOSSIBLE for Andre Maranne as a French name. Sorry if you think the contrary. Perhaps you think that Jeanne d'Arc was an English girl burned by French people, but this is also wrong. Thinking that Andre exists shows quite the same level of ignorance.

Accentuation is not just spelling. The differences of pronounciation between é and e, or c and ç are so important that when you speak of somebody's name, you cannot hesitate about which is the correct spelling.

Didn't we had this through?
Last time nothing has changed... ....why should something change this time.

Again:
We do what the rules or Ken/Gerri stated. They have their reasons for making it as it is.
And we should not always use such good meant threads to argue about this. If we want to do this again, let's make a new one.  ...But not in here.

One of them in such cases (E = E, É = E) could be that it should be possible to everyone, without knowing all rules of all languages, to contribute withing the rules.

Face it, surfeur, this program is primarily intended for use by us dumb Americans, who can't be bothered to learn how things work in other languages.  The results aren't "right," but they're easiest to deal with for the vast unwashed and uneducated masses of us.
