Agreed with basically everyone. It may be useful to see how other forums handle thsi sort of thing. Moderators working in public view with the ability to PM them and such is the norm almost everywhere. I can see why you'd want to handle things quietly, but if the problem isn't solved (it rarely is), then handling things quietly looks like doing nothing. The purpose isn't to embarrass people who are being moderated, but to make everyone accountable.

Lol.

1) Agenda-driven
2) Bloodsport

Which is what all this moderation talk is about to begin with, fortunately Ace, is hust honest about it.

What's wrong with you Skip?

There is nothing in Ace's post as it stands that is even remotely against you, yet you insist on dragging your issues with him into this discussion.
So much for bygones.

Sick of it!

I don't get you. All that I said was that Gerri's didn't answer any real questions? It was just a list of words. And of course, that is just my opinion...

There is only one user here that has posted in this thread that does not have a personal agenda. more than one are driven only by sheer hatred, some of the others are me too. In my personal, the moderation of this site has displayed a double standard multiple times and in multiple ways, I think that moderation attempts have not calmed the forums down, but heated them up to near intolerable areas, Geri. Look at some the some of the posts by some of these users and tell me that they are driven a personal agenda and/or vendetta, and further feel that it is perfectly acceptable behavior to set up threads which are nothing more than attack threads aimed at one or more users, such as the last one which was setup by a poll.

Geri I have held my hand out to every user in the Forums, in peace, some may have accepted, I hope so, we will see, more are welcome, but the fact that more have not accepted says more about those user and their personal agendas than it does of me. I think you are only fueling this hatred and feeding it even more, unfortunately I think that Invelos has allowed itself to be put into a no-win scenario. I was reviewing the other site referred to by another user this morning and was observing that one of the posters had actually bragged about his own poor behavior.

I am sorry geri this just all around a bad thing as long as it is fueled by hatred, as it has been from the beginning.

Kulju made absolutely no comment to you directly or indirectly and yet you accuse him of having a vendetta?  I thought you didn't hold grudges?

On second thought, you are absolutely right.  It's everyone else, it couldn't possibly be you.

Did you read nothing that Ace has said the last couple of days, which have been indeed hate-filled very clearly and agenda driven. I haven;'t seen any comment from Ace, that indicates he is willing to take my head in friendship and move on. I have been stunned by the depth of the bile that Ace has demonstrated and he has even all but admitted the same. I said Neill, i will not unilaterally disarm, but I will hold out my hand for ALL who wish to accept it, if it is not accepted then don't blame me, Neill, you are dealing with the wrong party. I can lead horse to water....I cannot make him drink. I can offer my hand in friendship...I cannot force anyone to take it.

We have some users who I will be forced to remain civil but skeptical of even if they take my hand, simply because they have demonstrated a penchant for betrayal and untrustworthiness. But that does not mean that i cannot be civil to them, it just means I can't trust them.

For Kulju
I think Geri's post answered many questions, even some of my own, but they were perhaps not the answers that one wanted to hear, and therefore they are viewed as non-answers and not informative, but the answers are clear to me.

I don't think punishments are the way to go, or only in exceptional circumstances. But what would help is for the monitors to make themselves visible, and step in earlier.

Of course, the monitors also need some time off, so maybe it was no accident that the recent multi-pages yelling spree coincided with a break in profile updates (remember those?, a much more constructive way to spend our time) coming through.

I think before anybody says let bygones be bygones, everybody needs to HONESTLY answer this question.
(if any of you have an question about my sincerity, please read my past posts)

If I started a thread that directly called out Skip, on any topic relating to Invelos, how many of you would call me to the mat for it.

Now think about that before you answer.  I don't think that there are 5 of you that would.  I don't think half of you could answer this truthfully to yourself.

Thank you for posting this Gerri.  I do think that you, Ken, or the moderators need to step in earlier in many threads to keep things civil.  I also agree with Mark and others in making your actions more public including indicators for banned or suspended status, much like your reputation status.

Yes, I agree. I can also give you an answer to a question, 2+2=4. Nice to know, but that doesn't  answer any questions eather, which has been asked by the users about what will Invelos do to make these forums a better place where people could actually enjoy to talk about the hobby that very many of us love. If you would read replys in this thread, you would notice that I'm not the only one wondering about that.

I know that is doable, because I read other forums. Only problem is that Invelos doesn't actually DO anything. Words are cheap, actions speak louder than words and so on....

I think one of the problems is, as Staid says, the moderators are also the screeners. And I would guess most of their time is spent screening, not moderating.
I'm assuming that they have some sort of system in place where enough red flags in a thread alert the screeners to go look, so maybe either the threshold is set too high or we as users aren't using the flags enough and are using posts, not arrows, to show our displeasure.

@Charlie, you're right, if I saw a thread singling out Skip for something, I probably wouldn't leap to his defence. I would consider it payback for all the times he has done it to others. Childish - probably, but I think that's human nature. But at the same time I'd like to think I'd know enough not to become an active part of that thread, possibly even posting to say something like "you shouldn't do this really."

Our moderators post only as an Invelos representative in this forum.  They are not regular customers who post under different names on this forum.

I have been thinking about this for a bit now and I think this is part of the problem.  As I have stated before, I was a professional moderator.  What I haven't mentioned, is that I never applied for any of the moderation jobs I held.  When I was hired at MAXIS, I was contacted via PM and asked if I would be interested in being a MaxisMod.  When I asked how they got my name, they said that I was refered by another MaxisMod based on my forum posts.  The higher ups reviewed my post history, agreed with the reccomendation, and offered me a job.  Once hired, I had to create a MaxisMod name so that my forum identity would remain secret.  None of the other mods, nor the forum community, knew who I was outside of my MaxisMod name nor I theirs.

In my opinion, this is the best approach as it means the mods have intimate knowledge of the forum community.  It is much harder to pull the wool over the eyes of someone who knows you.  Just my two cents.

There have been threads calling Skip out and he did get defended. I even defended him in the limited sense that it's not fair to say he contributes nothing.

Agreed!

And FWIW I think you'd make a great moderator.

While this may be true, the post you responded to wasn't.  I think the point Pantheon was making, and I am sure he will correct me if I am wrong, was that Ace's post was rather innocuous and did not warrant the response it got.

Not attacking, just offering a different perspective.

A couple points: all posts are agenda driven. If I didn't have an agenda to post, I wouldn't post. Most agendas are fairly innocous, though. Also, the way Martian described the Maxis process is the same way things worked at IGN, only we weren't paid. I think maybe four-star users should be given mod capabilities.

At least you are honest about it, but then, is also part of the issue.  Everybody says lets move forward, and people aren't willing (or capable)

I look at this way, If Skip decided to play nice today, and start this forward, how long would it be before somebody said something, that was a slight at Skip in some fashion or another.

The way it sounds, is there is too much resentment to go around.  And until Skip is banned, there is a group that won't be happy.

I would, and have.  I have taken quite a bit of flack, from a few users, for doing just that.  I have seen several users do the same thing...Pete comes to mind...so that's 2.  3 more left.
