There is an easy workaround to accomplish this. (...)

Unfortunately this does not work because DVD Profiler depends heavily on data in %APPDATA%.

Indeed no registry keys to change this folder.

To complete the procedure do the following steps. I am not a programmer, so this is very low tech.

On your memory stick, create a subfolder X:\DVD\Application Data

Now copy the appdata files to your memory stick.
"%APPDATA%\DVD Profiler" to X:\DVD\Application Data\DVD Profiler

Now create a text-file in called profiler.bat containing the following text
xcopy "d:\dvd\application data\dvd profiler" /s/e/y "%APPDATA%\DVD Profiler"
"X:\DVD\DVD Profiler\DVDPRo.exe"
xcopy "%APPDATA%\DVD Profiler" /s/e/y "d:\dvd\application data\dvd profiler"

Now start DVD Profiler using profiler.bat. It will first copy the files from your memory stick to your C-drive. Then start DVD Profiler. Make sure you leave the dos-window running in the background. When you close DVD Profiler, the doswindow will copy the appdata files from your C-drive to your memory stick. Again as previous, replace X with the drive letter of your memory stick.

It isn't fancy programming, but it should work.

Except that you have to also modify the path (drive letter) of your database in "%APPDATA%\DVD Profiler\Databases.dod" whenever the USB stick get a different drive letter.

I'm currently exploring a portable solution for my purposes. I'll let the community know, if I will manage to get a feasible solution.

Of course it would be great if Ken could add a portable solution into the base package. Maybe something with command line switches to give alternate locations for things the program is looking in %APPDATA%, "My Documents", and the registry.

BTW: Has someone explored the "Databases.dod" file format? Could somebody give some insight? Maybe Ken? It is basically the table that you will see when you select "Open Database..." from the menu. But it is in some undocumented binary format.

As promised I will inform you about the result of my exploration. I have put together a tool to move your profiler installation together with your database to an USB memory stick. I have named this tool DVD Profiler Portable Installer. I do hope Ken does not mind. Otherwise I will rename it.

You can download it from http://www.geocities.com/rho_dvdprofiler/DVDProfilerPortable/.

This is the first release of this tool. Therefore you should be careful about testing it in your environment before you delete your local (non portable) installation of DVD Profiler. And remember to always make backups.

I should mention that plugins are not supported yet with this tool (and maybe never will).

The portable installation should integrate smoothly into an existing PortableApps system because I have based it on John T. Haller's design and loosely on his examples.

If you're exporting registry information using RegEdit, it's important to note that you only want to export the currently selected branch.  If you do a full export and then import it into another computer, well, let's just say that's a bad thing.

I am aware of that. I only export the DVD Profiler tree from the current user. And no, I do not use RegEdit for export, even though the exported file format is REGEDIT4. If you're interested in the details, the tool is licensed under the GPL and the source code is included (will be installed by the tool).

Since I have not got any feedback, I assume that either nobody cares or it works as advertised.

RHo,

yes it works very well. Thank you very much for your work. It could be great if Plugins could be added in a next version but it's nor a priority.

The only thing I have noticed. It seems with the portable version, the drag-and-drop of headshot doesn't work anymore. I use Firefox on my computer. I didn't tried with IE7 but from Firefox, the drag-and-drop doesn't work with the Portable edition.

Does drag-and-drop of head shots work with Firefox and your normal (non-portable) DVD Profiler installation? It doesn't work for me with Firefox, neither portable nor normal.

Yes the drag and drop works with Firefox and the non-portable version of DVD Profiler. It's not a big issue but don't understand what is the problem. It's pretty much so easy to copy-paste than drag-and-drop I just need to accustom to do it with this manner.
I just tested with IE7 and it works worst than Firefox because I can't drag to the DVD Profiler window.

Dang,  every time I get a larger USB thumb drive (currently 4mb) someone comes along with something that will fill it up for me.

My 4mb drive has filled up a lot faster than 2mb did (and it filled up a lot faster than my 1mb drive, and so on, and so on...)
Another Ken (not Ken Cole)
Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges.
