The way that rule is crafted seems particularly problematic, since top-billed actors are now relegated to the middle of the pack.

Same with alphabetically listed end credits...

That particular rule has come into question several times over the years... and was attempts to rewrite the rule on multiple occasions in the rules committee forum. Every time the discussion ended with what we have now seems to be the best to go with. No it does not work perfectly for every film/release but not many of the rules do.

This rule still makes me shake my head.

Alphabetically listed end credits are a completely different thing. That's the way that someone at some point in the film making process decided to present us with the (entire) cast list. I have no problem with that. Us, taking sometimes very minor characters and deciding to put them before the main cast (that a lot of the time list the main actors at the beginning of both the opening and closing credits of the film) just makes zero sense to me. But hey, now for the cast of Marnie, we have "Man at Track" as the first character listed. A character that wasn't deemed important enough to get credited again during the closing credits now gets top billing in this program above the three main characters. So all's good...    (in no way meant as a jab at Floorwalker who submitted the credits, as he did it correctly as to how he's supposed to).

There's no reason for them not to go at the end of the credits. None. Even if you had a major character or major actor ending up at the end of the credits, it happens all the time with TV credits. A major actor playing a major guest starring role or something gets added at the end to single them out with a credit like "also starring" or "guest starring". It makes more sense for a couple of big characters or actors to get listed at the end of the credits rather than a bunch of minor characters getting listed at the beginning.

Just my 2 cents or course, which buys... literally... nothing.
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

It would be so simple, if we could list the cast billed in the opening credits and/or before the full end credits first. That's how producers weighted and sorted them...

Last time I gave up on this issue after Skip argumented: on theater posters (and he meant classical theater not movie theater) the most important actor is usually listed on last position - the relevance of this argument said anything to me surrender...

That is how I do it locally.  Cast in opening credit order, divider, then cast in end credit order.

There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
