I bought DVD Profiler for Windows (instead of using the free version and then cracking it as many people do...) mainly because I read that an iPhone app was coming out and also because it is a good program, with lots of interesting features.
I also bought the iPhone app (which is not very cheap) as soon as I saw it was available, without reading any review, because I trusted the work done by Invelos.
Now I find myself with two apps that don't work toghether and probably I will abandon DVD Profiler in favour of an app such as My Movies.
I know that the way my internet provider works doesn't help, but I think that the sync process in DVD Profiler should be improved.
I suggest to the software developers to add another option to synchronize with the iPhone app, such as putting the collection database on an Invelos' server or using cloud services such as Dropbox.
I would like to know what Invelos thinks about this.

Do you have a variable IP address ? if you do, then always use at the IP address at the bottom of your  PC 's DVD Profiler.

OK, it sucks that you can't get the programs to work together, but in this case I really don't think it is fair to blame Invelos. It is not simply that your ISP doesn't help, your ISP completely crippled your router. DVD Profiler isn't the only program that needs port forwarding and there are many other important settings a user should be able to configure on his router.

As for other syncing options, Ken already mentioned that in the future syncing with the online database will be possible.

I am not a software developer, but I think that since cloud computing is very popular nowadays, such option should be provided. My database is about 30 MegaBytes and I don't know if putting the databases on Invelos' servers would be too expensive for them, but if that is the problem I don't understand why it's not possible to use Dropbox.
I am glad to hear that synching with an online database will be possible in the future, it would be great to know approximately when.

There is an online database right now. You can upload and download to this database with DVD Profiler for Windows. What you can't do at the moment is sync with this database from your iOS device. But as I mentioned, that has already been announced as an upcoming feature. Hopefully we'll get it with the 1.1 update, but I don't think Ken got any more specific than "future update".

In the meantime you can at least read the online database from your iPhone via Safari.  Small consolation but better than nothing.

The problem is that Apple doesn't allow third-party apps/software to connect through the Apple Dock Connector (only iTunes and iOS are allowed to communicate over it).

I'm not sure that your statement is correct - when I connect my iPod Touch to my PC one of the options that I'm offered is "Sync this device with MediaMonkey" and I believe that Winamp also supports music sync too.  Maybe the problem is that DVDprofiler is trying to sync data that is not "music" ... I'm not an Ios expert by any means but I can see apps in the iTunes store to sync contacts and photographs too.

Clearly in some environments, for a number of users here, the existing data transfer method that DVDprofiler currently uses just does not work - and the two apps (PC server and Ios client) provide no information that can be used to debug the problem.

All of the WiFi routers that I've had to setup around my neighborhood recently seem to default to providing a local subnet without any port filtering - all the filters and rules restricting data flow sit between the local router subnet and the ISP connection.  So there should not be a problem with the PC and Ipod device communicating on a local WiFi network - in this situation Port Forwarding isn't even an issue unless you're trying to link a wired PC to an iPod.

My own Wifi network (running on PFsense) is setup with a "Permit all" rule for any packet on the WiFi network and I can't sync my data successfully between a laptop and iPod Touch, both connected to the same WiFi node and using the same subnet.  I also can't sync between a hardwired PC and the iPod even though the two nets are bridged and use the same subnet even though the laptop can access all of the other devices on the network through the bridge via SMB.

I have a feeling that when this problem gets sorted out it will not be the router that's the problem.

I figured that I'd just check my assumptions:

I have a PC running XP-pro and an iPod touch - both have access to the local WiFi network.

I'm assuming that when DVDprofiler is running on my PC that it's trying to communicate with the iPod via the local wifi subnet only - that no external connection to the internet or external server is required.

That is to say, if I have an wifi network and both the PC and the iPod on the network - then no external internet access is required in order to transfer the DVD collection to the iPod.

Is this correct?

Most of the time I have exactly the same problem - DVDprofiler says that it's "Shared on 'electra' (192.168.3.122), port 32847, 0 connected" and the ipod says it's on 192.168.3.124 - both machines have subnet masks of 225.225.225.0 wit the router and DNS address address as 192.168.3.1 - the database (~1000 DVD's) is not password protected.

Most of the time the two machines refuse to connect - every now and then they will connect and transfer data for a while but never long enough to transfer the DVD collection over.  When it's done this it will usually it will get as far as "Copying Images" before it quits.

It makes no difference if the Windows Firewall is on or off.  The windows PC can see all the other machines on the network except the ipod - but then Ios isn't an SMB device so that's to be expected.
(...).

With me everythings works fine. The only thing I have to make sure of is that the IP adress shown on my PC´s DVD Profiler matches exactly the one on my iPhone.

As I have a variable IP, it always changes as I restart my PC. So, double-check the IP adresses on your PC´s DVD Profiler and on your iPhone/iPod, and if they match it should work fine.

I totaly agree.. I have My Movies, but thought that the DVD profiler app would have more user friendly options.. But I'm not able to sync it with my Iphone.. I'm wondreing how My Movies are able to sync with profiler database, but not their own app...... I'm considering to switch to Collectorz..Have anybody any experience with them??

I think we should give Invelos a little time to update the App so that we can upload our databases on the web (which we already can do) and the iPhone can sync directly from the web. I am still hoping to hear something from Invelos...

Can't help you with the other apps since I never used them.

Did you check the other threads in this forum ? There are quite a few where connection problems were solved. If you still can't solve your problem, please be more specific and maybe we can help.

I have collecterz and it works a lot smoother than DVDProfiler for iPad, however I do like DVDProfiler on my iPad much better.

I like many others seem to have a very difficult time trying to connect my iPad to the laptop.  I am using an apple router to!  I have tried defualt port, and port 80 as well as 8080, firewall on or of makes no difference, I have used computer name as well as IP address as indicated on the lower part of DVDProfiler, yet nothing works except the "UNABLE TO CONNECT", that comes on all the time.

its worthwhile remembering that my Movies doesn't sync with the database - it just syncs with the online collection. And that is slated for an upgrade to the dvd profiler IOS version (no idea of timescale).
