| | Posted: | | | | I'm halting all my HD DVD purchases for now. I plan to give it a couple months to see what Universal and Paramount do since they could flip at any time. Most of the big changes have come with little to no warning, so I'm not putting much faith in their support beyond today regardless of any press releases they might put out.
I also want to see if the combo player market takes off or not. I just don't want to be stuck with a bunch of discs I can't play in a few years because my player dies. If combo players become common, I'd have no problem buying more HD DVDs. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here.

| | Posted: | | | |  Paramount Announces HD DVD Slate for First Quarter"Paramount Home Entertainment (PHE) today announced its upcoming slate of releases on HD DVD for the first quarter of 2008. A compelling array of action-adventure, drama and family fare, PHE's lineup of HD DVDs provides something for everyone, further expanding the format's offerings for a broad consumer audience. Released on January 8, PHE's first HD DVD title of the year is David Fincher's director's cut of the mesmerizing drama Zodiac, which has been cited on over 200 critics' lists as one of the top 10 films of 2007. The HD DVD includes over three hours of in-depth bonus materials including a multi-part exploration of the making of the film, the facts of the real-life attacks and more. Following on February 26, PHE will debut the director's cut of Robert Zemeckis' visually stunning cinematic experience, Beowulf, which conjures a world the likes of which has never been seen before with state-of-the-art technology and exhilarating storytelling. The HD DVD will include a feature-length picture-in-picture track, web enabled Beowulf Profiler, A Hero's Journey: The Making of Beowulf with optional pop-up trivia and much more. Director and screenwriter Sean Penn's widely praised adaptation of the inspirational true story Into The Wild arrives March 4 with behind-the-scenes material that takes viewers deeper inside the enthralling, real-life story, characters and experience, along with the compelling drama Things We Lost In The Fire, which features phenomenal performances by Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro, as well as a discussion of the film and deleted scenes. DreamWorks Animation's funniest new animated hit Bee Movie buzzes onto HD DVD on March 11 loaded with exclusive content, including web-enabled downloadable features such as The World of Bees and a Build-A Bee Avatar, a picture-in-picture storyboard reel, customizable menus, Barry's trivia track and much more. Ya, most people said the movie was okay, but seeing it in 3D made all the difference since it turned what would be just an animated action movie into an "experience". Following reports of a packaging error, Paramount has issued a recall of its forthcoming HD DVD release of 'The Jack Ryan Collection.'
As we first reported Tuesday, early copies of the highly anticipated release found their way into consumers hands earlier this week, but fans who were initially delighted to snap up a sneak peek began noticing something strange as they dived into the four-disc set.
Despite the "Special Collector's Edition" label clearly stamped across the front cover of each disc in the set, and a list of bonus features promoted on the box art (including audio commentaries, featurettes, and more), no one was able to find the advertised supplementary material on any of the actual discs.
As these reports began to surface, fan reaction was swift and predominantly negative in our forums area, with most wondering how a mistake like this could slip by the studio.
Today, Paramount has issued a street delay for the disc, and is asking all retailers return their stock to the distributor. No new street date has been announced, and at press time it wasn't clear whether the studio is planning to ultimately release the existing barebones discs with new corrected packaging, or with new feature-packed discs. We'll let you know as more information comes in.
The text of Paramount's email to retailers follows below:
Please be advised that there are typographical errors on the packaging for the Jack Ryan Special Collector's Edition HD-DVD. The packaging inadvertently notes special features that are not on the HD-DVD. As a result, this product is being recalled and street date is being delayed.We ask that you do not sell or rent this product to consumers and that you stop shipments to additional destinations. A Paramount Home Entertainment Representative will contact you with an RA number to facilitate sending the product back to Paramount Home Entertainment's manufacturing facility. Returned product should include any unit previously shipped to retailers or other destinations as well as your on-hand inventory. We will provide further information on the availability of new product shortly. Should you have any further questions, please contact a Paramount Home Entertainment Representative. Do writable HD-DVD drives exist for computers? I can find BD writers (and combo BD writers/HD readers) pretty easily but don't recall seeing any HD writers. You can buy some Toshiba computers with a burner, but you can't buy an add on drive. My local computer store had two (2) blank HD-DVD discs in stock for a few months until one guy bought both, now they are special order only. They cost $11.19 for a 1x 15GB disc. BR cost more at $12.69 but you get 2x 25 GB and you can buy a drive for any computer. As a computer storage media HD-DVD is as useful as a chocolate tea pot if it's only supported by high end models of one brand of computer. | | | | Tom. |
